Is This For The Old People?

Real Estate Agent with Sailwinds Realty

Is This For The Old People?

I have several homes for sale in over 55 communities and today I got this very interesting call from an agent.

PhoneShe asked if she could show one of them. It’s lockbox and vacant, I said, so go ahead and show it. Her next question was: Is it for the old people? I said, excuse me what did you ask me? She repeated it. I guess I was insulted because I told her that I was of that age group and I felt insulted by her question.

She got all flustered and apologized for asking it in that way but her customer was 25 so she guessed she wouldn’t be showing it. (She didn’t notice the 55+ notice in MLS?). No, I agreed, she wouldn’t be showing it and next time she should ask the question more diplomatically.

Sometimes, I have a mean streak.

And sometimes someone brings it out.

Or maybe I'm just a grumpy old person.

When someone has a brain fart and says something clumsy like that, I simply rephrase it when I confirm what they are asking.  "This is advertised as a retirement community and it has a 55+ age restriction for residents."

People are not going to learn unless we teach them.  Yes it is tedious.  It will always be tedious.  There will always be people new to the business who have things to learn.  We can help them, or we can beat them down and reinforce negative stereotypes that say being mean to our fellow agents is OK.

We can be leading our colleagues on a journey of self-discovery every time we interact with them.

"I have several properties in 55+ communities. If you have Buyers looking for these kinds of houses, please refer them to me - I will pay a referral fee."

We train ourselves to look for SOLUTIONS - so what is the next step?  (THINKING) - How can I turn this into business for both of us?  "I invite you to look at this and my other properties for sale in 55+ communities.  I think you will be pleasantly surprised at what you find - so will your appropriate clients."

How did you guess, Harry?

Kathy - both us us and we will get to Disney together to celebrate.

Barbara - I agree! Glad your little ones are not like that; somehow I knew they wouldn't be.

Michael - thank you for telling me that Roger reblogged it. Words do have power as our kids learn in school especially from bullies.

Oh, Bob, thank you so much for letting me know it's okay, I was actually feeling guility......NOT.

Alexandra - you are right.  It's all in the attitude. Which sets our tone for life.

Kathleen - I understand and agree with what you're saying.

Patricia - that's not in my nature to contact her broker or her. I will take the high road--I always do but felt I could vent here among friend.

Rich - I good clip upside the head is so much more satisfying. :0)

Thank you everyone for commenting.

I'd have been insulted too. What an insensitive thing to say.  Old is a state of mind - and that agent is tiresomely rude with her "old school" attitude about the vibrant 55 plus set. Glad you "let her have it," Toni!

Nice to know that over 55 is considered "OLD". Geeze what would she think if it was an over 62 community. Yes, she should be more sensitive, but it is kind of funny.

Good afternoon Toni, Why read when (maybe they can't) and someone will tell them what they missed. I also wonder how many other shirt cuts they take! Make yourself a great day.

It's all in the presentation and I would have been offended too.  You can ask anything but you need to have some etiquette in the question.

Wow Toni, Larry and I do a very nice business in the 55+ communities, and no one has ever asked that question to us. Doesn't she know that at 55 life is just beginning!

Debb - thank you.

Helen and Larry - I know 90 years olds that I think of in their 30's. They ae so much fun and so vibrant.

Raymond - me too; it seemed more important to find out if it was lockbox/vacant that what type of neighborhood.

Liz - you're right, ask me anything but make it sound tactful.

Larry and Sheila - 55+ folks are involved in all kinds of activities and full of fun.

Joni - no, she obviously didn't think before she opened mouth.

Toni, Toni I don't usually get offended especially about something like that...hell, I AM old! However, that doesn't mean I would have let the comment slide...I would definitely have engaged that agent in "spirited" discussion.

Cute post, Toni.  It's funnier than it is grumpy.  I'm think that will be the last time she refers to mature individuals as "old".  But, it's not as pejorative as "blue heads".

Toni- I'm not buying in to you being a grumpy, old person. Perhaps people just need to be a litle more diplomatic.

Toni, I bet I know what astrological sign she is or at least has that sign prominent in her stars so-to-speak, I am one of them.  Easy to put one's foot in the mouth, not thinking the question through.  My guess she did learn from her question, been there many times.  Hopefully she learned to look more carefully at the listing but these days I do not take much of anything personally and have learned to laugh a lot.  The comment would have taken me back a bit as well, and I too know people who are in their 90's and above who have more spirit and energy than people who are a lot younger.

Sharon - who knew it would be featured :)

Nick - I probably wasn't as insulted as I indicated (literary license, you know) but I thought it was a bad way to put it and wanted her to know that.

Lloyd - since I don't know what a blue head is, i'll take your word for it ;). And, no, it was meant to be funny. Thanks.

Christine - thank you!!! Although I have been known to be a tad irritable once a year or so.

Mary - that's not something I believe of you. You are a lady and I know you are a diplomat.

Toni - do you actually ever have a mean mood???  I like Alexandra's comment as well....There are so many people that are 25 or under that are nearly dead...age has nothing to do with being alive, thriving and happy..

I personally find you an inspiration, and that agent...has a lot to learn.

Hi Toni,

I would have to say "OUCH" to that comment!  I don't consider myself to be one of the "OLD PEOPLE" but to someone in their 20's I guess I may seem that way.

Great post Toni... as always you keep us entertained.  Congratulations on the FEATURE too!
