What To Do With the "Man Cave"

By

A friend asked me for my opinion regarding changes to his Colorado home prior to our listing it for sale.  The property has been immaculately kept and I didn't have many suggestions other than he remove the display of hunting trophies and firearms from his "sanctuary."  My friend was a little put out by my advice, but when I explained to him that we need to "offend" no one, he reluctantly understood.

Now, I'm a rational Second Amendment kind of guy, and I appreciate the rational possession and use of firearms.  Hunting and the shooting sports are big in Colorado, yet I respect that not all Coloradans hold a similar affection, and given the fervor that the topic of gun control has produced, I felt, against logic, compelled to ask my client to pack his guns.

I am a hunter...and fill my permits almost every year and yet I have zero mounts in my house.  You could look our house over and except for two camoflauged buckets on the shelf in the garage, no one can tell where or how many guns are in this house.  I am fine with mounts...my wife hates them.  If we were looking for a home my wife would eliminate it if their were mounts in the home.  a gun cabinet or safe...no big deal to us but You did the right thing.

Around here (Population 510), it probably would actually help sell the place! :)) HA!

It is a smart Idea to make the home as neutral as possible for the sale.

If the place gets too bland, sanitized it looks like all the rest of run through the spin property machine. Dare to splash some color...within reason, one moose or deer or bear in Maine is not going to hurt the sale because they love outdoor hunting...just because some don't. More do...majority of what you are peddling, the market niche you are after demands certain items, trappings. Every market is so different in what works, or does not.

I will never forget the padded S & M room with the chains, handcuffs, masks and mirrored ceiling.  The rest of the house was beautiful - but everyone was very distracted and some people "tuned off" by that one room.

Yup, sellers are wise to de-emphasize their personal lives and passions in deference to the opinions, tastes and preferences of potential buyers.  For many people, it's easier to say no than to say yes.

I would think that the liability of having firearms hanging on the wall during showings could be an issue.  It's just smart to remove anything that could be offensive.

I would have to agree with you on this one.  Take down the deer heads and put away the guns!  Good post and interesting topic.

marketing is about trying to appeal to your target audience...Following that rule, neutralizing the place would gain more exposure..good post

Dave, your advice was good. When selling a home you have to appeal to the masses.

Whether it's firearms or religous items, it's always best to remove the "personal touches" from a home to make sure it appeals to the broadest possible audience.

Whether there is a pro-NAR buyer, or not . . . lock up the guns!  Geez.  It has nothing to do with politics.  It's a no-brainer.  You lock up the weapons, the drugs, the money, the jewelry, the anything personal (like bills with account numbers) etc.

WOW!  By all the comments here it looks like I should get rid of my 'mounts' in the dungeon before I list my house?

I'm listing a house that has a gun cabinet full of shotguns, and a gun safe in the 3rd bedroom.   He is taking them to a private storage facility.  It's not "Opinions" that the Owner is concerned about; it is someone stealing the Guns!

A seller can display whatever they want in their home, just as long as they don't care if the place won't sell.
