The Burke Substance Abuse Network (BSAN) has kicked off its campaign to encourage citizens to properly dispose of their unused medications.

Through a program named Burke County Operation Drop Box, there are  two safe locations to drop off unused or expired medications, over-the-counter medications, medication samples, pet medications, medicated ointments and lotions, inhalers and unopened epi-pens.Those locations are at the Burke County Sheriff’s Office in Morganton (NC)  and the Valdese Police Department (NC).

Law enforcement agencies across the state and nation almost unanimously cite the problem of prescription drugs abuse and connected crimes to be among worst problems they face. The North Carolina Attorney General’s office reported a 400% increase in prescription drug-related crimes across the state in the last five years.

Sheriff Steve Whisenant describes the program in this PSA: http://burkesubstanceabusenetwork.wordpress.com/2013/04/28/sheriff-whisenant-and-burke-health-dept-presents-pill-drop-box-psa-via-30-sec-video/ .
