That spring in your step may be a rotting deck.

wood rot deckHave you ever walked across a wood deck that was springy or bouncy? That may not be your youthful step; it may be the early signs of a rotted wooden deck. Something to consider checking before someone gets hurt.

A structurally sound wood deck should not have a bounce to it, it should be solid. A bouncy deck may indicate deck boards that have rotted and in need of repair. As the wood rots the board gets thinner in strength. Imagine the bottom half of the board rotting, you are walking on a thin board.

Not sure about your wood deck being free of rot? Call a qualified general contractor to help with your dry rot and water damage.

Tom: I saw a big guy go through a deck. You'd think you'd notice the cracking and you have time to jump. Nope. It happens so fast, like stepping into space, one leg down, the other bend and still up. Ouch.

It doesn't take long for an accident to happen Hella. My son had his leg fall through a deck board, he weighs about 110 sopping wet.  :)

Good morning Tom. You're title really caught my attention: well done. This is scary and I am sorry about your son's accident. I hope he is OK.

If there is no spring in my step as I walk across a deck, how do you expect me to dive into the yard?

I think that many wood decks out there need to have some attention Roger. Catching those rotted boards early can change things quite a bit.

Hmmm...

Jay - Platform diving may be the answer.

Funny you should discuss decks Tom.  We were just at a house that had a real strong impressive deck. How nice it was to walk across something like that. Unlike the many we have been on that felt as springy as a diving board!

Al and Peggy - There are so many that are bad, you can't help but notice the strong decks.  :)
