HALIFAX - A nearly two-year period of political detente has been shattered by Nova Scotia's governing Conservative minority, which is looking to bloody the Opposition New Democrats ahead of the next election.

Since the beginning of the new year the government's communications strategy has undergone a sea change, adopting an aggressive tone towards the party's main political rival.

News releases have been issued under a number of provocative headings accusing the NDP of everything from flip-flopping on a home heating assistance plan to running a "political circus" in its handling of committee hearings into the failed immigration nominee program.

The assault culminated this week with party president Scott Armstrong calling for an investigation by the province's chief electoral officer into the workings of the Nova Scotia Citizen's Health Care Network.

The Conservatives accuse the citizen's group of being "a U.S.-style political action committee" that is a "front for the NDP."

When asked about the tactical shift in strategy outside the weekly cabinet meeting on Thursday, Premier Rodney MacDonald said the NDP had been given a "free ride for too long during the time of our government."

Its called the "hold on for dear life" strategy...
