10th Annual Hotchkiss, CO Sheep Camp Stock Dog Trials

10th Annual Hotchkiss, CO Sheep Camp Stock Dog Trials. The locals just call this event The Sheep Dog Trials. It's widely known and well attended. It's coming up again on May 10th - 12th, 2013 in Hotchkiss, Colorado. As always it will be held at the Hotchkiss Fairgrounds. The event website has more information on start times as well as links to local information.

10th Annual Hotchkiss, CO Sheep Camp Stock Dog Trials

There are other events and demonstrations planned, and there will be plenty of food available, too. Check out the website for more information. The primary focus, though, is on the dogs. It's really something to see the dogs and handlers work together to make the sheep "behave". These dogs are amazing and respond to just a whistle or hand signal from their handler. The trials mimic what the dogs do on the ranch. Any herding dog can enter, but the border collie seems to be the breed of choice. It's almost like the dogs are judging each other. While one dog is doing it's run, the other dogs all sit at attention and watch very intently.

This is fun for the whole family...including the family dog. The 10th Annual Hotchkiss, CO Sheep Camp Stock Dog Trials are coming soon. I hope to see you there.

Just for you, Bob, I've closed the cold air gates. Now give it a few hours and you should start to warm up down there in Texas. How's that for service? LOL.

I love coffee & real estate. I am out of coffee!

Oh, my favorite pet... a boarder collie, australian shepherd, sheep dog, chow mix (we never really knew, but he looked like that with a black spot on his tongue and curly tail!) He would chase my brother's baseballs until his teeth were falling out and get sad when we said he'd had enough. Beautiful animals! Sounds fun!

Hi, Kristen...he sounds like a neat dog. That is a great memory you shared and I can pick your dog old and still wanting to do what he loved to do.

Hi, Scott...our different parts of the country do have different events. I've been reading all about them this morning on AR. Our community makes it so easy to open up our eyes to what's unique about the different areas of our country.

More opinions than you want to hear about.

Looks like a great opportunity to show the public how herding dogs work.  It wouldn't take a whole lot for me to augment my sporting dog home with a border collie or an Aussie.

Great picture, Mike. We have two dogs. Jazzy is a large mixed breed. She was abandoned in our rural area. We took her in. She's the best dog. Bear is our 1.5 year old Rottie. He was a Christmas gift from my husband. Neither dog is a herder, but they are wonderful just the same.

Hi, Richie...Meeker, CO has the big sheep dog trial event. If you make it up that way, let me know. I'll make a trip there.

I need to experience this event - in person - at least once in my life.  The closest I've ever gotten was watching the movie "Babe" ... I loved that movie :)

Hi, Carie. Baa Ram Ewe...isn't that what Babe said? It's been a while since I've seen that movie, and it's a good one. My daughter had it on VHS. LOL...those were the days.

Debbie, this sounds like such an entertaining and fun event for everyone for the dogs. It made me think what we have in Texas with demonstrations at the State Fair of Texas in the fall. Those dogs are might smart from what I have found.

These dogs are extremely smart.  Farmers would be lost without their help.

When we lived in CO (near Denver), we attended several of  these shows. They are amazing! The dogs are smart and gorgeous, and the people are delightful. We have owned several Shelties, all of whom inherited their ancestral herding genes. We were "herded" into the same rooms, kept together on hikes, etc., for years. Fun blog entry . . . thanks.

Hi Debbie - I have attended a few of these trials over the years, and the training and intelligence of the dogs is an amazing show, well worth going out of the way to see. If I wasn't puppy sitting, I'd seriously consider driving over to watch.
