Helping Peoria's Pet Population
I am a pet lover. I find that most people are. Whenever I pass a pet adoption event, I can't stop myself from looking. I am always saddened by the idea of a dog or cat without a family or a home. Unfortunately, with two dogs and three cats at home, I know I can't adopt any more. I think part of being a responsible pet owner is knowing your limitations...knowing how much you can handle and how much you can afford. Yet I still look. And wonder. Could I possibly help just one more?
And I have learned that adoption is not the only course of action to help.
Arizona Humane Society
I have adopted several of my pets through the Arizona Humane Society over the years. The Arizona Humane Society takes in over 44,000 companion animals annuals...an average of 120 animals daily. Luckily 17,000 animals are adopted out or placed on an annual basis. While that is great, it also means that most do not find their forever home. And the average cost of care and shelter for each animal not placed is $300, which can add up quickly when you look at the numbers.
I got a letter from the Arizona Humane Society. A Matching Grant Challenge was established to match donations dollar for dollar for a total of up to $10,000. The Match Grant Challenge is only effective through May 15, 2013, but any and all donations will definitely be welcome to help care for these animals. So if anyone was thinking of making a donation to the Arizona Humane Society, now might be the best to do it!
AHS Thrift Stores
The Arizona Humane Society has recently announced plans to open a 26,000 square foot thrift store. All purchases are tax free and one hundred percent of all proceeds from their thrift store sales go directly to providing food, shelter and medical attention to animals in their care. They need help filling their stores and will arrange for pick up of your donations, which are tax deductible.
So whether you give directly to the Arizona Humane Society, shop in their thrift stores, or donate items to be sold in their thrift stores, everyone can help Peoria's pet population in one way or another.
