Why Fishing is better than Golf...

Well, I'm in an office now full-time.  My time out of the office is a balancing act of family, kids, more work, and fun.  I've spent more time on the water than most people.  In my "past life", I used to spend a lot of time on the golf course.  I was a financial advisor; it's what 'we' did.   Then came the big light bulb day 9 years ago..

I had a boat full of customers...Dad, kids, and their spouses...  I had a great talk with the Dad on the way out to the fishing grounds.  He was really into fishing and being on the water.  I heard some great stories.  He talked the talk.   He was ready for a heck of a day.  When it came time to drop lines, he was the last in the water.  He took his time.  He had his eye on everyone else.  I saw all of this, but none of it really registered at the time.  After a little while, everyone was catching cod and it was great.  He landed a few fish, but took his time.  Something wasn't right.  Comparing his conversation in the cabin on the ride out with his performance, there was a disconnect.  I couldn't peg it.  He looked at me; I wasn't puzzled, but he could sense that I noticed something.  "Brain cancer, doctor gave me three weeks."

He basically got his whole family together for one last fishing trip.  He fished all day; albeit slowly.  He did, however, really cherish spending that time with his family and friends all around him.  He'd sit back, relax, and soak it all in.  Seeing him enjoy that simple time together like that turned a really sad experience into something very inspirational for me.

So, I look at golf, when you're together, but talkig is limited; you're always moving, paying attention, and really not "sharing" much...Fishing does provide that; I watch Wicked Tuna....just the sitting around waiting part together...that's really a good way to get to know people better; it's a great way to tell stories together; it's plenty of time to relax.

I love it; fishing and relationships...oh, yes...and fish fry parties....nothing says summer like having a neighborhood over to eat fresh fish.  Monday rambling...

We all need a piece of sanity outside of our insane business... for me it usually revolves around sailing, but fishing helps fill that void in as well.
