Who Wins the Active Rain Most Valuable Player Award? Who Is the Active Rain MVP?

By
Real Estate Agent with New Home Hunters of Fort Worth and Tarrant County

A little over a week ago a post appeared on Active Rain.  It was all about WHO was going to hit the Two Million Point goal First!

In this post... Lenn Harley was in the lead, with Todd Clark in Second Place, and Pat Kennedy in Third Place.

But... that begs the question: Does having the Most Points equate with being the Active Rain Most Valuable Player?

Just who IS the Active Rain Most Valuable Player?  Just who IS the Active Rain MVP?

In baseball, we have the player with the highest batting average, the player who hits the most home runs, the player with the most hits, and also the player with the most runs driven in.  Baseball then analyzes all these numbers, and comes up with Baseball's MVP.

So, how do you choose who is the Active Rain MVP?

Being a former math teacher a zillion years ago... I was playing with some of the numbers as far as the points totals, feature totals, the number of Featured Posts for every 100 Posts written... and how "productive" each post is... on the average.  (I called that the "efficiency" category)

Here is what I came up with:

Here are some different ways of looking at this as far as who the TOP PRODUCERS are:

1st - The most obvious category is the Rainer with the Most Points.  That's easy to figure out.

2nd - Then... there is the Rainer who has the Most Featured Posts... but I didn't leave it at that.  It wouldn't be too hard to have the most Featured Posts if you wrote 20,000 blog posts.  You just need a bigger shovel to pile up that many posts.  LOL.  So, I juggled this a bit and to even the playing field, I calculated this on the Most Featured Posts for Every 100 Posts Written.

3rd - and Thirdly, how "productive" is each post?  Does the writer just write post after post after post, like someone who writes 50 Market Reports, or does tens and tens of Photo posts... or do they find some way to "give back..." like making comments to others, or replying to comments made on THEIR posts?

Here's what the numbers tell us in each of three categories:

 Just points totals:

 1st - Lenn Harley - 1,932,580.  2nd - Todd Clark - 1,917,711.  3rd - Pat Kennedy - 1,895,749.

Featured posts:  # of Featured Posts for every 100 posts written:

 1st - Jeff Dowler - 14.53.  2nd - Pat Kennedy - 13.65.  3rd - Katerina Gasset - 9.84

Efficiency:  Points divided by number of posts written:

 1st - Pat Kennedy - 679.24.  2nd - Katerina Gasset - 550.67.  3rd - Cindy Jones - 535.34

~                                        ~                                        ~

I then gave 3 Points for First Place in each category, 2 Points for Second Place in each category, and 1 Point for Third Place in each category.

All in all... Six Active Rainers scored in either First, Second or Third Place in at least One of the Above Categories.

         The Results are In!

Pat Kennedy:        1   +   2   +   3   =   6 Total Points

Jeff Dowler:          0   +   3   +   0   =   3 Total Points

Katerina Gasset:   0   +   1   +   2   =   3 Total Points

Lenn Harley:         3    +   0   +   0   =   3 Total Points

Todd Clark:           2   +   0   +   0    =   2 Total Points

Cindy Jones:         0   +   0   +   1    =   1 Total Point

The Active Rain Most Valuable Player Award...The Active Rain MVP

... goes to Pat Kennedy.

Congratulations to these Six Active Rainers... and also Congratulations to all Active Rainers no matter how long you have been an Active Rainer.

Please NOTE:  For the great majority of us Active Rainers... the POINTS and all of the information above are much less important than the RELATIONSHIPS we build, both personal and business.  And... through Active Rain and their SEO... the BUILDING of OUR BUSINESSES is obviously extremely important.

This post is simply another way of looking at POINTS, for those who attach importance to them.

There is Much More to Active Rain than Points... etc!

Brad:  Just to insert this comment now so it is next to yours... you make some excellent points.  I just re-did my own points, and I have 1007.26 points per post, which puts me at the top of this list for points per post, and my "features per 100 posts" of 6.62 puts me ahead of you, Cindy and Todd.

Regardless, I feel I did not make the list myself, either.  On the whole Active Rain tally, I ended up smack dab in the middle of page Two at #74.  That's nice, but it puts me nowhere in contention with anyone on this list.

I have written some excellent points, and my writing skills are pretty decent... but I am nowhere in competition with the folks on this list.  I stand out in one category, but... all in all... I am not even close.  And that's ok, too.

Liz & Bill in comment #38 make a great case for Bryant Tutas... and I agree.  Bryant is an excellent blogger.  We all have our talents.  But this post is about "MVP"... which gives it a much wider spread.  I can think of several other categories that I would have loved to use, but the numbers were not available to me.  What I would love to have is the comparison of comments made ON my posts to the others... and also the ratio of MY comments made on other posts (and my comments made in reply to comments made on my posts.)  Not enough data available.

Well I love Pat, so no question from me.  I would also like to peak at all the data myself.

Karen, it's an all round performance that counts for sure. The following comments are for argument sake only.

I may want to mention Barbara Todaro's name for FASTEST reach to million points - and she is now #9 on leaderboard. I am sure Lenn will be the first one to reach 2,000,000 - but I can bet, it will be Barbara who will reach 3,000,000.

Also George Souto has pretty good record! Like you, he also has more than 1,000 points per post and for every 100 posts, about 18 of them are featured! Not to mention that he is #21 on page #1 of LeaderBoard (so the total for him will be 6!)

Karen Ann, that is an impressive analysis of the Active Rain Statistics, where do you find the data for all of this number crunching.

Praful:  Just taking a look at Barbara's numbers... fastest is not an issue.  It took Barbara over 5000 posts to achieve a similar number of Featured Posts as Katerina and Pat... who did so with 2800 posts.

Barbara is an excellent blogger... but this is NOT only about points, or posts written.

And remember... I left myself OFF for MVP consideration.  My other numbers are decent, but do not compare to these folks.

Also, Praful, if you would like me to consider different people, please provide different links for them.  One more thing, this is both objective and subjective.  I have been here for going on six years... and that experience gives me direction as well.

Bob:  All of the information I used in this survey comes straight from info easily available for you, as well.  It's right here... on the different public pages of Active Rain.

Here is a link for the main ActiveRain Leaderboard - Nationwide.

For more information on each person, click on their name, and look at some of the links.  This will give you all the information I had.

Also... I basically used information that I felt would be apropriate for finding a Most Valuable Player... and not the highest in any certain category... but where other categories were way off.

Also... could a case be made for all of these people that they made Active Rain, and the Rainers they came into contact with... better?

So... enough of this.  Sorry.  This was not meant to pit one against another.  The POINT was to show that just basing #1 on points (which could easily be achieved by writing 5000 posts... and which meant I would use the Top Ten in points... or maybe a few more) was not all that mattered.

Karen Anne, your breakdown on stats is much better than a simple point total.  So many personalities ply the waters of AR and your effort gives substance to the readers here.  I will have to bestow an honorary MVP upon you for taking the time to calculate this, or more correctly an MVB, for Most Valuable Blogger.

Karen, I also have paid attention not only to points, but features as well...I've seen members with over 10,000 posts without a single feature...I certainly don't have many features, but I have at least tried to post something worth reading from time to time.  I guess in the end we post to improve our business (that's my thinking anyway), anyway no judgment here...we all use AR for our own reasons.

Please Remember:  I always encourage multiple comments from my readers... and also encourage comments between commentors.  Also, this is often much easier to do when the post is NOT Featured... like this one isn't... LOL.

Contrasting ideas are just fine.... just as long as it doesn't turn into a "food fight."  LOL x 2.

Missed your post but would agree Pat Kennedy would be my #1 choice.  Talked to her today as she is recovering from double knee replacement surgery.  Fortunately she will be coming home soon.  Thanks for including me in the list.  I never would have thought I'd be anywhere near the top of anything on Active Rain.

Your math skills sure came in handy for this blog post. Great work, Karen Anne.

My Habitat for Humanity meeting ran really late tonight. A client showed up 2.5 hours late for an appointment and I went to check out a new listing that will hopefully be coming on the market soon. The late meetings and appointments had me running behind. I had a BPO to finish and then the seedlings to water. There are six trays of them. Sorry I didn't get the phone call.

Karen Anne, my kind of research and I hate math! But I do love to dig and have looked at the percentage of featured as compared to how many posts have been written.

I think you are spot on and all mentioned are worthy opponents. Thank you for putting this out there!

Karen Anne... This was a great post I missed.

Now...you need to get that 9,000 points to be the 75th person to reach 1,000,000   75th...the platinum number!!!

You deserve it so don't let those others pass you up!!
