Real Estate Ads Move to the Internet

Here is a good article in Business Week Online about real estate newspaper advertising.  Acording to the article real estate advertising revenue has increased, though it is expected to be eclipsed by online advertising by 2010.  Read the article here

my thoughts on Real Estate newspaper ads:

1.  They are pretty good for open houses.

2.  People don't go to my Web site from the Newpaper ads.  I have tested this and no traffic from the ads to my website!

3.  Real estate newspaper ads are very inefective for buyers to try to find a home-no search function, they are organized by broker/agent.

4.  There is a large group of people that do not use the Internet!  Older folks.  Yes some of them are tech savvy, but many are not.  And guess what!  These people have huge equity in their homes - have lived there for 30 years etc.  They can afford to easily sell at a profit in a down market.  Newspaper does reach these people.

5.  The online ads that newspapers publish are not very effective.  In our market the ads are simply pdf's and are non searchable or SEO friendly.  In this day and age!!

What is your experience with nespaper ads?

You don't get a good return on these tyype of ADS however the sellers still want to see them so you have to budget some money.

Wouldn't waste the money on them.  While the older generation of Sellers may well not be "connected", unless they are selling a home in an age-restricted community, about 80% of the prospective buyers will be looking on the internet.

Print IMHO is way overpriced.  Question.  If online existed before paper, would someone be busy inventing paper and print ads? :-)

I agree with Jennifer, sellers expect to see them.  I have also found that even though they aren't good for bringing in the perfect buyer, if done enough, the community gets to know your face and that you are an active agent in that community.

I quit using newspaper ads about five years ago. The only print ads I still use are the homes magazine ads the company pays for, and they generate almost nothing.

In the pre internet days I received the most business from small liner ads in the Oakland Press (back then I was in the Clarkston MI Area) but once the net took hold nothing in print seemed to generate enough business to justify the cost ( even though I was with a large company and we had a discount with the paper).

I can't believe the newspapers haven't done something with price to counteract this trend.
