Design tip for Sylish hardwood in Westchester - Diagonal Layout

Installing hardwood on a diagonal can have a big impact on the room's look.

First, diagonal makes the space look larger.  That's because your eye follows the longest length of the room, and if you remember geometry, the hypotenuse is always the longest length of the triangle.

Second, a diagonal layout adds visual intrigue to the room - it just looks much more visually intriguing than the standard straight lay.

Diagonal works beautifully, and it has the largest and most dramatic impact in these types of rooms.  This is one of my favorite design tips.

A diagonal layout will cost a bit more.  That's because there's a bit more labor involved and it requires some extra wood, as there will be extra cuts along the edges.  Most customers agree that the incremental cost is worth it.  It looks stunning.

Sometimes, it makes sense to go diagonal for the whole house; other times, it looks better to set a specific room apart from the rest (e.g. the great room, living room or master bedroom.

The direction of the wood is critical, as you've pointed out.  This seems to be even more critical in smaller spaces as the diganol helps to open them up and appear larger.

The same basic strategy can apply to tile as well.

Hi Debbie - I think flooring on the diagonal creates an interesting look --- I haven't seen a lot of it our market over the years and I agree with you anything that can enhance a space so it appears larger is a good thing.

I love it, hypotenuse! That ought to be an AR challenge, the hypotenuse challenge. 2,500 points if you can work the term into a blog post! lol

I haven't seen many diagonal wood floors here in New Mexico, if any, because we don't have that many wood floors. The pictures look awesome though!

Yikes, you brought up Geometry! Honestly, I'm no fan of the angled look for my own house. Interesting topic though.

Can you comment on whether the diagonal pattern should draw your eyes toward a sliding glass door?

Nancy - If the diagonal goes towards the glass door, then yes; if it doesn't then no.
