Things that go bump in the Intermountain West - Seismic Events

earthquakes in the Intermountain West

134 seismic events for the week in the Intermountain West (Utah to Yellowstone). (From a weekly high during that period of 163 events.) Certainly above average for the region.

Main events (3.0 or greater)

  • Light earthquake (4.2) Lava Hot springs ID
  • Minor earthquake (3.6) Lava Hot springs ID
  • Minor earthquake (3.0) West Yellowstone MT

131 micro earthquakes (< 3.0)

  • West Yellowstone MT (43 events)
  • Lima MT (18 events)
  • Mt Pleasant UT (17 events)
  • Kanarraville UT (7 events)

Information for my hobby of studying seismic events (earthquakes) for the Intermountain Region comes from the University of Utah Seismograph Stations maps.  As always my comments are to inform, never to alarm. Nowhere is prediction attached to my hobby.

Golly Larry, that sure is a lot of seismic events going on in your area and surrounding states. I don't know enough about earthquake action outside of Natural Science and Physical Geography college courses. But Larry, what you write sort of scares me: main, light, minor, micro...(ha)...still, the major word I hear is 'earthquake.' Had no idea you guys experience this. Think I will stay with Florida's hurricanes, alligators, and sink holes. :)

Larry. It is amazing how many minor earthquakes occur without notice, well for everyone but you.

Jane - Utah is a little more above sea level than Florida. We need something to make living in the mountains a little more exciting. Most people are totally unaware of seismic events, although I would like to think they might be prepared.

Belinda - More than normal ~ but feel free to have your share.

Hi, Larry!

I spent a week in Saratoga Springs in summer of 2011.  I don't remember a lot of moving and shaking going on... but if you say so, okay!

Hello Larry, I enjoy reading your reports.  Your area has the earth quakes and my area is in tornado alley.

My maps had gone off the air on Monday afternoon. A question today to University of Utah Seismographic Station asking whether we had stopped having seismic events prompted their restarting with current information. ps we are still having them.

Larry, here along shores of Lake Erie we don't have much seismic activity that I am aware of. Once in blue moon we have 3.0 quake.

Events still ocurr, although most in the last week have been in the micro category. In the last hour West Yellowstone recorded a 3.3 (minor), just to keep the tourists happy, no doubt. The nearest to me in the last week was a few miles away in a canyon of the Wasatch Front (micro). As usual, nobody noticed.
