Please understand my intention is not to brag here. Instead I offer what I feel are the pro’s and con’s of becoming the number one agent team within your brand.
My brand is Sheri Dettman & Associates and we’re located in La Quinta, California and serve the Palm Springs Real Estate market. We are affiliated with Luxury Homes by Keller Williams, and I believe we have roughly four hundred plus agents. About two years ago we were told we are the number one Keller Williams team in our market (a team is three or less agents, any more than that is considered a group). Here are my thoughts on the pros and cons of becoming number one.
Pros Of Becoming #1
Marketing. Buyers and sellers seem to like dealing with a top agent. Success breeds success!
Hiring. Other agents want to be on a wining team. Being #1 attracts the best talent.
Scale. Achieving $50 million in sales (our 2013 goal) gives us a substantial budget for marketing, training and custom service opportunities.
Recognition. I’ll be the first to admit that wining does feel ok!
Client choices. This is big and I utilize my veto vote two or three times each year. Clients that are abusive and/or unreasonable to me or to my team are politely shown the door.
Customer Service. I don’t believe we could have gotten to our level of success, and to where we plan to go with our business without putting our clients needs ahead of ourselves.
Cons of Becoming #1
Copycats. Our brand somehow became a training example for other local agents. That seemed to lead to a few bad apples copying much of what we have created. One local team even had the nerve to copy and past twelve pages of our website content onto their site! And on an almost daily basis we find copies of our original photography (not just MLS listing photos) popping up on competing real estate sites.
Pressure. This is self-induced, but when you’re number one and others are nipping at your heals, you feel pressure to keep on being number one. We’ve had to set some big goals again this year, but then you know what? We would have set big goals regardless of our being on top or not.
