Scenes From The 2013 Hotchkiss, CO Sheep Dog Trials

By
Real Estate Agent with Cedaredge Land Company

Scenes From The 2013 Hotchkiss, CO Sheep Dog Trials. It was really amazing to watch the herding dogs in action, but there was much more to the event. There was sheep shearing, yarn spinning and beading. It was a good ole country time at the Hotchkiss Sheep Dog Trials.

The weather couldn't have been any more perfect with temperature in the mid 70s. The Town of Hotchkiss was very welcoming to it's guest and there was a big community yard sale and several smaller yard sales.

Make sure you pay special attention to the sheep shearer. That is local rancher and retired Delta County real estate agent, Doug Hamilton. Doug is so deeply rooted in this county, there's even a road named after his family. I hope you enjoy this video. It starts and ends with scenes of the herding dogs doing what they love.

Hi, Mike...Doug told me he use to be able to shear 26 sheep in an hour. That's amazing to me. Doug is older and has slowed down a bit, but he still does a great job.

Hi, Dorie...I'm glad you liked the video. Thanks for stopping by.

Nice work Debbie!  Great to show what life on the Western Slopes is all about.  No one knows them better than you do Debbie.  Those sheep dogs are brilliant and obviously well trained.

Hi, Fernando...I had to make sure to get one video clip in there showing the mountains. It was a beautiful setting.

Hi, Richie...I want to hear all about your pup. I'm a dog lover. I have two of my own.

Thanks, John. These dogs really are amazing. I can't believe how focused they are. The dog in the beginning of the video is only one year old.

Hi, Melanie...This event was an example of real country living.

Hi, Debbie...I've never seen sheep being sheared before, and I live in the country. It was a wonderful afternoon full of neat sights and sounds.

Thanks, Scott. Have a great day, too.

Great video, Debbie!  I love watching dogs do what they love - their intensity is amazing.  We have two Belgians.  They don't herd sheep, but they do a geat job of keeping us together!

Hello Debbie, first of all congratulations on becoming an AR Ambassador.

When I was young and living at home we sheared our Angora Goats and Our sheep twice a year my job was to pack the wool and mohair into the burlap sacks, I hated it.....lol

We actually hired a crew to do the shearing but we kiddos got to pack and tie the bags, that was back when it was profitable..... At one time Sonora Texas was the mohair capital of the world but now its like Australia or somewhere else??

Thanks, Bob. I don't envy you your first job. But I did have a mohair sweater ( that was years ago ) that I loved. It was so soft.

Hi Debbie,

Thish was such a totally enjoyable video and I was surprised that they shear the coat in one piece. The dog was so cute chasing the sheep back and forth and I while watching this I thought the sheep were thinking "Make up your Mind which way you want us to go".

BTW-Congrats on your new "Ambassadorship".

We have sheep dog trials in our area too.  I made the mistake one year of bringing along my Australian Shepherd puppy and she saw no reason why she shouldn't participate - YIKES!

Congratulations on your new Ambassador position!

Oh Susan...the image makes me laugh. Your dog just wanted to join in the fun. I have two dogs. One is a mutt we got because someone dumped her in my area, and the other is a Rottweiler. The Rottie was a Christmas gift from my husband. I got him in 2011. He's not two years old yet, but he's big. I did dog training classes with him and he's really well behaved...but it's like having another person in the house. He'll be two on Thanksgiving this year. Already he weighs 150 pounds. Our dumped mutt is Jazzy. She's getting old now. It's sad to see. She had a really horrible beginning with someone. She was badly abused. But she's come a long way and is a much happier dog. We love her and hate to see her getting older.

Hi, William. Doug use to be able to do 25 sheep an hour. That was a while ago. He's a bit older now and doing this type of task takes it toll on him. Doug is a great guy and he was a wonder agent.
