Character Building and Site Building - same thing!

I've disappeared for a few months and not that I need an explanation but I had made the lunatic assumption that I would build my own WP sitecharacter building and launch it recently.  I am a dare devil of sorts and have never shied from hard work or tackling something new.  But I have to say in this instance, I had made a HUGE MISTAKE.

Honesty is good in situations like this.  Too late, work started, and have to finish somehow when you have just bitten into the biggest internet elephant that you could ever take a bite out of.  I've built 2 sites previous to this and not to mention totally remolding my RE/MAX franchise site from top to bottom and can't ever remember having this much difficulty.

Am I getting old?  Are things just becoming way too complicated?

I did have a plan, a finish date and a budget but those quickly flew out the window and I was on the 'hail Mary plan'.  Everyday I began with tackling one completion before beginning another segment.  That didn't work either.  I was beginning to think I was cursed.

As an example, I judiciously researched different IDX services and when I finally clawed my way into setting one up, the 'tech guru' told me that what I wanted to do was completely impossible and that I had been misinformed.  What!!  An IDX is the base function of a good real estate website so how could my #1 feature not work according to plan?  So I gave notice that I was terminating my contract which was granted.  I was depressed that I had to start all over again.  So I decided on IDX choice #2 and had to pay a startup fee of $99 which always goes against my best judgment.  What's the start up fee for?  They couldn't tell me only for 'our costs'.  Costs for flipping a switch or sending me some code?

But I digress ....  so now I am forced to work with this 2nd choice IDX monster that is 100% customizable (their words) but I can't figure out how I can get it to work for custom subdivision searches.  Try as hard as I might I just couldn't get it to work.  I've bought into another IDX monster and have to make it work at least somewhat respectably.  Besides it's ugly too.  Boring and ugly.

So part of the 'hail Mary plan' comes into play.  The original IDX calls me and says that the other tech guru was misinformed (actually was terminated) and that yes I can indeed do everything that I had wanted with their IDX and he would send all instructions.  What!!  Great, because now I'm out $100 with the boring and ugly 2nd choice IDX search.  Back to Plan A and all is good with the world except for a wallet bruising lesson.

To be continued ......

Special appreciation and accolades go to Steve Russell who helped me behind the scenes with coaching, suggestions & technological wizardry.  He was referred to me by Sharon Tara who read my plea for HELP! here on AR.  Without his help, I would not have completed my Wordpress elephant.  I suggest getting help from professionals that can make the process go more smoothly.  Steve can help.

Lyn - yes I get it!  Building ones own site and trying to figure it all out can be a nitemare. Good luck with the IDX that you land one. We just changed ours and I'm finding that I like it so much better.  We did pay a $99 fee and I was told that was for setup and support and so far they've been extremely helpful.

I am so glad to hear you got the website completed.  I just took a peek and it looks great.  I really like the photos you used.  Steve has been very helpful to me over the years and I'm so glad he was able to help you too!

Oh Lyn, I do feel your pain.  I've had growing pains for some time too.  I admire you for sticking to it.  It's frustrating and hopefully Plan A will work nicely after all!

Carla:  Well I'll be doing a series so that I can help others from not making the same mistakes that I did.

Sharon:  Thanks so much for passing Steve's name to me.  He was very helpful & knowledgeable.

Anna B:  You have to update things every once in awhile with something new. The search feature doesn't have to be so boring if you look around for some of the new offerings.

Lyn, We use the #2 and I'm slowly but surely figuring it out, but also a bit frustrated with some of their customer support.  This is my 2nd time explaining to them that their MLS feed is mislabeled and what they're calling SUBDIVISION is really our SIC codes.  NOT the same thing.  They just need to remap one line from the MLS raw feed and I think we'll be fine.  And I figured out that the zoom level of the custom map searches is determined by the TYPE of map search I have for my preference.  Aerial/Hybrid lets me zoom in closer than Terrain/Street.  Bill

Bill:  That was the problem, they are not realtors so they don't understand the feed segments from the MLS. I understand the MLS feeds but somewhere they are transposed. Support couldn't help meld the 2 together so I could get it to work. They 'always' blamed it on the quirkiness of the MLS & I knew right away that wasn't true. They should label the feed with the correct labels so we could at least figure it out ourselves making it more usable to us.  They called it odd that we had 'attached & detached' housing which is the 2 main feeds.  Odd? Like how odd? Goes to show you.

I can understand you taking on something new that you wanted to master, but once the decision is made, that it was not the right decision, then it is time to stop and get someone on in, to take over to get the job done. I have been there and learned, the best way out of a bad deal is quick.

Joe:  Did get help after a certain point when it became overwhelming. That's another post on how that all went. What a process.

Kathy:  It is isn't it?  Overconfident little .....

Bill:  Yes, another example on not jumping in over your head, how to get a life preserver when you do.

Lyn, I'm going to enjoy this series. I would like to build a WP site but after much angst, ended up going with RealGeeks. After reading this first installment, I'm glad I did. On to part 2.

Thanks for your post, Lyn Sims.  I am doing a major overhaul on my three Wordpress websites and have been leaning the hard way how difficult it is to learn. I thought I would hire help but that is not working out well either.

John:  Thanks for waking this post.  I decided eventually to go the easier way & try Placester which I am very happy with. They have videos that help you get thru the more difficult sections. Also they have email tech help if you still can't wrap your brain around something.

The WP site that this post is about is now without an IDX again as they went out of biz or are noncompliant with my MLS. I think it's a good idea to get help & get your mind working on real estate again. I'm sure they have WP therapy sessions!
