Social Media Optimization via Google+

Google’s social networking website began with a relatively slow start in 2011. Since then it has picked up the pace and was at 343 million active users at the end of 2012 which is the highest used social networking site besides Facebook. As Google+'s user base continues to grow it could even surpass Facebook, although I kind of doubt it. For this reason, it’s a tool worth adding to you social media toolbox. I have compiled some tips on how to setup a Google+ account and how to maximize the benefits of using Google+.

Creating a Google+ Account

Making a good first impression is key, so you will want to invest time into developing your profile. Google+ is unique in that its profile information is much more in depth then many other social media sites.  This is an opportunity to elaborate on what you are trying to promote and allow people to get a sense of who you are and what skills you possess or what products or services your business provides.

First off you will want to add a picture to your profile, something professional yet friendly and approachable. Adding details about your hobbies, or interests as well as occupations, education, and skills will give the audience an idea of who you are. Google+ also allows you to use a tagline at the header of your profile to give people a feel for your style. If you don’t like any of the pre-existing images, you can make it even more personal by uploading your own image.

Another thing to consider as your setting up your account is that Google+ allows you to link out to other websites creating the perfect opportunity to link to your business website and other social media profiles, which can increase your exposure.  By taking the time to create a detailed profile, you will be able to connect with others on a more personal level and stand out from the crowd.

Creating Meaningful Content

As with any of the social media marketing sites, providing your audience with valuable and/or entertaining content on Google+ is a key component.  Posting or re-posting information that has no meaning and lacks interesting or useful content is really sabotaging your whole effort. You will want to post valuable content that gives your audience something to consider or at least chuckle about.

Because different people respond to content differently, it’s wise to mix it up a little. For example, post images, and videos along with traditional text to catch the most peoples attention. A big part of getting people to read your content is making it easy to skim.  This blog post is actually a fairly good example, I have header to break up ideas, lots of spaced and images.  Lengthy paragraphs and lack spaces or formatting will bore readers quickly.

Creating a Badge

One of the easiest ways to help people find your profile is by installing a badge or icon on your business website. Creating a badge will allow people to quickly get to your Google+ profile. To create a badge, you will need to need to sign up on the Google+ Platform Preview. Then, go to the Google+ configuration tool page and choose the style of badge you would like. The process takes a couple of minutes but can have a profound effect on your Social Media networking efforts by increasing the amount of people who will access your Google+ profile.

Creating Google+ Authorship

If you’re looking to improve branding for your company this is a good idea. If a reader enjoys an article you’ve written, they can quickly access other articles you have written and some might follow you to get future article posts. Besides helping you establish a loyal reader base I think the most beneficial aspect of Google+ Authorship is the higher click rate you will recieve by having your photo and simply claiming Google+ Authorship.  Rumor has it that Google actually rewards people who use Google+ (and Google+ Authorship) so if SEO is as important to you as it is to the Property Management Software company I work for it is definitely worth at least checking into.
