Bike to Work Friday May 18th in Edmond OKIt’s tomorrow, but it’s not like you have to stop and put gas in your tank — dust off your bike, take the time and bike to work tomorrow.

News Release from the City of Edmond:

May is National Bike Month and what an exciting time of the year! Nationwide, bicycling is growing in popularity as both recreation and personal transportation. In communities across the nation, there is a growing need and responsibility to provide options that give people the opportunity to bike—to bike more often, to bike to more places, and while making travel on roads safe for all road users. Last year, the City of Edmond completed a Bicycle Master Plan with input from hundreds of citizens in our community, which identified 146 miles of new bicycle facilities for our community, such as bike lanes, shared lane markings, neighborhood way-finding signage, and paved shoulders.

To promote Bike Month, the City of Edmond and the Edmond Bicycle Committee are sponsoring the 8th annual Bike to Work event scheduled for Friday, May 17, 2013. Biking to work is environmentally friendly, creates less wear on our roads while reducing stress and increasing personal health and fitness.

Our event will stage in front of the Mitch Park concession stand at 7:15 a.m. to be ready to start the group ride at 7:30 a.m. The ride will go east on Covell to Broadway/Boulevard and generally south to the Festival Marketplace. At the Festival Marketplace, there will be the CELEBRATION of Bike to Work, tips for commuting on Edmond’s roads along with refreshments and door prizes. Come ride for FUN, FITNESS or TRANSPORTATION!

Sponsors for the Bike to Work Day are the City of Edmond/Edmond Bicycle Committee, Al’s Bicycles-Edmond, UCO, Cafe Evoke, Caviness Landscape and Design, JuiceBlendz, Charley’s Bicycle Lab, and Uptown Grocery. The Bike to Work event will be cancelled if it rains.
