Palencia Elementary School Principal Don Campbell recently welcomed Davidson Realty President Sherry Davidson and Marketing VP Peyton Davidson to check out the exciting features the new school has to offer its students. A 40-year education veteran, Don has acquired a specialty for developing and launching new schools. He has overseen the opening of several schools including Wards Creek Elementary and now Palencia. Last August, he spearheaded the opening of this state-of-the-art elementary school, which serves more than 700 students.
The Palencia tour began with a demonstration of the school’s robust technology offerings, namely its all-digital model. All school textbooks are online and accessible from on-site desktops, classroom iPads, and home computers. Although it is dedicated to technology-driven education, Palencia also boasts a strong Media Center that offers 60% of its books in print form.
Don explained that in addition to the school’s focus on limiting paper books, Palencia was constructed in line with Green Building Standards including a recycle and reuse program, and is currently applying for the LEED Award (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). The school also maintains a compost area to create soil for their gardens, which produce beans, vegetables, and fruits for the cafeteria.
The school leverages remarkable innovations to save on energy costs. For example, by using the ice storage machines to make ice during the night, the entire facility can stay cool during the day.
What else make Palencia special? Students get to exercise their physical and creative muscles as often as possible! Student enrichment through arts, music, and exercise take center stage at Palencia, including full-time art, music, and physical education classes as well as a Lego Lab.
Students and their families love the St. Johns County area and the new school Don Campbell has helped to create. To learn more about the area and the school, reach out to a Davidson Realty agent at (904) 940-5000 or stop by their offices at 100 East Town Place, St. Augustine, 32092.
