In State College we're blessed with a treasure only 30 miles away, Raystown Lake. Raystown Lake makes for a great summertime weekend getaway whether it's for some time on the lake with a boat, a canoe, or a kayak or even just a camp site nearby.
Raystown Lake features 29,000 acres of land with an 8,000 acre lake. It is the largest lake that is entirely within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The lake was created by the US Army Corps of Engineers and was completed in 1973. It features beaches, picnic areas, and boat launches.
There are boats available to rent of various size and speed. From personal experience, it makes for a great weekend with friends to rent a boat for the day and head out on the lake for water skiing, tubing, and cliff jumping. Just be on the lookout for "Raystown Ray" the mythical Loch Ness-like creature fabled to swim the water of Raystown Lake!
Raystown Lake also features a small hydroelectric dam responsible for a good deal of power to the local valley and town. During the day a lot of the boaters will tie up near the dam to socailize and hang out.
Also, if you're of the daring type there are a few cliffs that are great for jumping off into the lake. They're high but not too high, probably about 20 to 30 feet high. Be careful though, the rocks are sharp!
Just along the shores of the lake there are plenty of places to stop and have a picnic or even just hang with friends and bask in the sun. Don't forget your sunscreen.
Other local attractions to Raystown Lake are the small town of Huntingdon which also houses Juniata College. Huntingdon is a great small town with a small town feel. A quaint downtown area is good for shopping and just strolling as well.
