Customers do come back...if you stay top of mind

By
Home Builder with The Flooring Girl

Over the last month or two, I've been blessed with some "blasts from the past"...several customers from 4-5 yrs ago.

hardwood in westchesterThe first one I met 5 years ago at a Chamber of Commerce.  She called me about some flooring 4.5 yrs ago, but was't quite ready.  Over the years I ran into her at a couple of chamber events (interestly, neither of us are members any more).  We were also connected on LinkedIn (where I post daily updates).  A few months ago, she emailed me (via LinkedIn) and said, "we are almost ready."  Words I love to hear.  She told me that every time she thinks of floors, she thinks of me.  (cool!)  This job closed about 2 weeks ago, and we'll be doing their floors in July.  Can't wait.

Next person is someone I met a Home show 4.5 yrs ago.  I originally met w/ her close to 4 yrs ago.  Then again 2 yrs later.  She gets my monthly newsletter.  I know this because one time she responded to it and told me she gave my name to a friend of hers.  We must also be connected on some social network (not sure if it's facebook or linkedIn or somewhere else) because last week she called, and my smart phone showed her picture.  I'm gave her an updated estimate over the weekend, and I am going there today to finalize some details (colors and job scope - job is now slightly larger).  Oh, and she loves my website and read several posts on there, which has not only confirmed that I'm the one to go with, but she is now going to do an extra coat of poly (since I wrote that in my post). Sweet.

westchester carpetThe next person is actually a past customer from 5 years ago.  She has gotten a lot of compliments on our floor and has given our name out to some customers.  2 of them have called over the years.  She gets the newsletter, too and said she sees me all over the place on linkedIn, and she's so happy that we are doing well.  She may recarpet her place, but this depends on whether or not she selling it and what the real estate agent advises.  She did not have a real estate agent, and thankfully, I know an awesome one who specializes in her town...and of course I met her on Active Rain, so I was thrilled to give her the referral since she has helped me so much.

Sometimes, people just aren't ready.  Sometimes it's due to budget and sometimes, it's time/priorities, and sometimes, life just gets in the wya.  One of the keys is to make a great connection and then the other is to stay top of mind, so that when they are ready, they will call you. This is a reminder to myself to be consistent.

I've sort of had this happen with a buyer I met a long time ago.  After a year working with another agent they called me out of the blue because I had made a good impression on them.  Honestly, I'm not so good at keeping in touch.

Remembering people and treating them with respect makes all the difference. That is one of the best ways that we can build our business.

Meaningful, regular contact is critical.  The key is "meaningful".  Generic items often get trashed before they are read.  Personalize your contact method and information, keep it current, and be real.

Staying top of mind with your past clients pays off hugely. I do at least 60% of my home sales with repeat and referral clients... but I am always touching them, touching them, touching them without even pushing real estate a whole lot. They couldn't forget me if they tried!
