I drove to Ulupalakua to take a look at the new wind turbines which went online here just a few months ago.  As I kept driving I thought I would never get there, but they soon popped up over the horizon.  Actually it's more like Kanaio, and way past the Ulupalakua Ranch Store, but it's all part of Ulupalakua Ranch.  Even though there aren't a lot of homes in this area, the power will supply energy to a lot of homes in nearby Kula.  The 21 megawatt project should provide power for about 10,000 homes!

These 8 wind generators have very little impact on the visual landscape as they are in a remote part of the island, far from any resorts or busy roads.

Maui, and the state of Hawaii, is really embracing alternative energy sources and trying to wean off imported fossil fuels.  We're in a good position to do so, and things are getting better all the time.  It's great that our leaders are planning for Maui's energy independence.

Not only is this project good for Maui, it helps the Ulupalakua Ranch to stay in business, ensuring open space and a ranching lifestyle that would otherwise be lost.

Hi Georgina, We have hundreds and hundreds of the wind turbines out in our deserts. It takes many to provide a reasonable energy flow.

Georgina, this is a good idea as you have an endless supply of wind ripping through the islands.

Laura - yes that part of the island is always in need of rain, but I think they got some yesterday.

William - hundreds and hundreds!  That's great!

Sharon & Bruce - yes it's almost endless.  They have a battery bank too, to help them even out the times when the wind slows down.

Thanks for dropping by!

I remember seeing them the last time I drove around the backside from Hana.  They're VERY out of the way and few would ever see them.  I hiked the Lahaina Pali Trail up to the wind turbines above Maalaea a while back.  Those things are HUGE when standing next to them.

Georginia,

Thanks for taking us with you on this journey. It's the wave of the future. We have them in TX too. I like what you said that they have very little impact on the landscape. Finding renewable energy is necessary.

Thanks for a great post!
