I drove to Ulupalakua to take a look at the new wind turbines which went online here just a few months ago. As I kept driving I thought I would never get there, but they soon popped up over the horizon. Actually it's more like Kanaio, and way past the Ulupalakua Ranch Store, but it's all part of Ulupalakua Ranch. Even though there aren't a lot of homes in this area, the power will supply energy to a lot of homes in nearby Kula. The 21 megawatt project should provide power for about 10,000 homes!

These 8 wind generators have very little impact on the visual landscape as they are in a remote part of the island, far from any resorts or busy roads.
Maui, and the state of Hawaii, is really embracing alternative energy sources and trying to wean off imported fossil fuels. We're in a good position to do so, and things are getting better all the time. It's great that our leaders are planning for Maui's energy independence.
Not only is this project good for Maui, it helps the Ulupalakua Ranch to stay in business, ensuring open space and a ranching lifestyle that would otherwise be lost.
