WHY MEMORIAL DAY?
Shame on us if we have to ask!
Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. I repeat. A day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. Nothing else!
Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic
To help re-educate and remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day, the "National Moment of Remembrance" resolution was passed on Dec 2000 which asks that at 3 p.m. local time, for all Americans "To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to 'Taps."
Nowhere is any mention of…
Mattress sales.
Used car sales
Appliance sales
Television sales
Grocery store sale events.
NO MENTION AT ALL.
On Monday, the nation will be honoring those who have fallen defending our country's freedom. None of us would be doing what we are doing today if we had not been protected by those who gave their all.
For anyone in my part of town, there is a Memorial Day ceremony at Purple Heart Park, 10050 E. Rita Road. Tucson 85747. Nothing fancy, but you can thank the Veterans that show up and participate.
Attending will be the Military order of the Purple Heart, Chapter 442. Recognition of guests and support staff, and live music courtesy of University of Arizona Alumni Band. Free. 10 a.m. Monday.
It would be really nice to see a big turnout.
My personal thanks to all who served this wonderful country.
