Lance Cpl Gavin Brummund in Afghanistan died on June 10, 2010 at the young age of 22. The sacrifice he gave to all of us will always be remembered as should all American hero's that have given the ultimate sacrifice.
He was one of my older son's best friend and is one of the best young men I have ever known. Gavin always seemed sure of himself and always was positive and a delight to be around. His energy he had transferred to everybody and everything he did. When my son was in Middle school he was bullied by a group of boys, Gavin stood up to the bullies and made a huge difference in my son's life. Gavin was never hesitated in taking action and doing what is right to the day he died. His smile, enthusiasm and energy to live life with out fear and with great joy are a great example for all. I will always appreciate the sacrifice Gavin and all Americans that payed the ultimate sacrifice.
Gavin was the first soldier to die from our small county in over 30 years. Calaveras county has a higher percentage of High school kids joining the armed forces, but we have been bless with no casualties since early in the Vietnam War. When Gavin was welcomed home the roads were lined with residents and flags for over 40
Miles. It was amazing the turnout. It was well deserved for such an amazing young man who consistantly took action the do what is right..The photo to the right is a flag that has remained for 3 years on the road since Gavins and his family were welcomed back after his death.
I will always remember Gavin for what he did for all Americans to preserve our freedom. Again, Memorial day will always remind me to take action and do what is right. So many young men, like Gavin, have lossed their lives, so that we may live with such freedom in America.
