Porch Mornings and House Needs and Wants!

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Richard Weisser Realty

Porch Mornings and House Wants and Needs! It’s the time of year that lends itself to “porch mornings!”  My day starts with hot coffee and a cool breeze as I enjoy observing the world waking up for another day.

I suppose that it is hypocritical to inject my wireless laptop into the serenity of the surroundings, but at least I am getting to enjoy a bit of real life as I delve into the virtual world.

When we were shopping for a house, a “rocking chair” front porch was a must-have on our list of “needs.” A porch is not only a great place to sit and relax, but it also adds a nice touch of charm and beauty to a home.

We did compromise on a lot of our “wants” when we bought, but we did not budge on any of our “needs” and now eleven years later we have no regrets.

A dove is mourning, and some geese are honking despite the mocking from the crows.

This is one of those mornings when I’m glad that we did not give in.

Great post. Front porches are awesome! Love them alot myself.  Notice the point you made between needs and wants.  Another idea for a great post of an important point to make to Buyers. Thanks Richard.

I too enjoy the chance to sit outside on my porch or deck. This week I'm enjoying my morning coffee overlooking the beach. SIGH.

Richard, a front porch is indeed a wonderful thing.  Mine gives me a great view of what's going on up and down the block.

Oh I love a front porch, don't have one. There is a big difference sitting on the front lawn or a front porch, LOL.

Richard lovely front porch!  I'd be wanting to sit out there and enjoy a coffee and mornings.  We just refinished our front porch, including bright new pillows for the porch swing and red door with a big yellow flowered wreath. It's so inviting once again! During the summer months we mainly sit outside during an evening monsoon rain storm - until the lighting gets to close for comfort and then we scramble back inside the house.  The rest of the year it's nice enough to enjoy coffee on the porch and wave to neighbors walking by. Priceless!

Richard -- my wife would have loved to have a great covered porch like yours, but her need for a rambler (due to bad ankle) was much more important.  Maybe one of these days I will get the deck built out back.

Open porches should not be ripped off, not used. They were the open air have a heart to heart talk area of the home before the days of private, 55 minutes for a weekly fee sessions of life therapy. Turn off the TV, pull up a rocker and something cold to drink, a tasty morsel to munch on and chill out on an open porch with folks who care about you. And the feeling is mutual. Like the Walton's with gram, three generations under one roof giving sage advice to the granddaughter while shelling new peas, husking fresh corn for the family supper table.

Richard, A front porch was important to me too. I don't get to sit like I would like but do use it to sit and make phone calls when the weather is warm.

Hi Richard, we have a front porch, but mostly are out back on the deck or below on the patio.  Where ever we are we hear nature and,  I like you would not change it for anything.

One of the things I miss from childhood was the street my grandparents lived on. All the homes had a big front porch, if not a big back porch, some had both. What used to crack me up is walking down the street and the homeowner and a few neighbors and/or visiting friends would be hanging out just talking and enjoying their time together. As you walked by you always got a friendly hello, how's your Dad or Mom, and an invite to join them. Glad you held out for the porch! Though mine is no big deck, it's comfy and I too enjoy my cup of Joe in the morning listening to the birds cheeping another day into action.

Hi Richard, I can see that the front is just perfect to sit out no matter the weather * that being of course limited to Rain or Shine and not the cold temperatures time. I am sure you are glad you were patient. A lovely home!

I'm with your Richard.  Both homes that I have purchased as my primary residences had porches.  No stoop for me. There has to be room for several chairs and people ot sit and a table or two.
