Discovery UMC Farmers Market Co-op begins THIS Saturday, June 8th. Eastlake Farmers Market

Discovery United Methodist in Hoover, Alabama, is partnering with PEER, Inc. and the Eastlake United Methodist Church to bring fresh fruits and vegetables to seniors and YOU.

The Eastlake Farmers Market, which is held in the parking lot of East Lake UMC, is open Saturdays, May to October. By supporting the Farmer’s Market you not only support local farmers from Jefferson, Blount and Chilton counties, you also bring sustainability to the Eastlake neighborhood which brings fresh fruits and vegetables tEastlake Farmers Marketo neighborhood seniors and area feeding agencies.

June 8th begins the Market Basket Program. For only $400 ($25 per week), you get a basket of fresh produce for 18 weeks. Baskets can feed a family of  2-4 for a week and will contain a variety of seasonal produce, recipes, and occasional specialty items such as honey or pastries. You can also purchase a “half basket” for $250 ($15 per week), which will feed 1-2 people. This is an example of whaEastlake Farmers Markett you would get in the ½ basket.

I have been participating in the Market Basket Program for the last 4 years and can’t wait for it to get started.  Each week I get plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables AND the satisfaction of helping area seniors who would not otherwise have access to fresh locally grown produce.Cabbage

Because Eastlake is “quite a drive” from Hoover, The folks at Discovery UMC decided to start a Co-op.  People in Hoover who want to participate in the program, can pick their baskets up at Discovery UMC, on Stadium Trace (by Hoover High) at 11:00 AM each Saturday.  Depending on the number of people in the co-op, each member will need to go to Eastlake 1 or 2 times during the summer to “take their turn” for pick-up. If you would like to benefit from FRESH fruits and vegetables while helping seniors contact Andrew Bird or Discovery.
