Sharing THEIR world with US. A universe in my own back yard by Richard WeisserA scurry then a rustled frond,
They flitter, slither, plod along.
From leaf to lawn they dash and dart,
A universe in my own back yard!
    (R Weisser 2013)

I do not live in what Horace Kephart would describe as the “Back of Beyond.” It’s just an ordinary house in an everyday neighborhood that boasts nothing remarkable or unique.

But there is a universe in my own back yard that I have enjoyed observing over the years.

The sheer number of unique species that either reside here or occasionally pass through are a delight to behold and can be easily overlooked.

You hardly know where to start. The mammals are the most easily recognized. We have spotted deer, rabbit, squirrel, chipmunk, vole, opossum, raccoon and now armadillo. The canines include fox and coyotes.

Next are the reptiles and amphibians which have included both turtle and tortoise, frogs of all kinds, lizards, skinks, and toads, and of course several species of snakes.

The birds are too numerous to count, but our favorites are the hummingbirds, pileated woodpeckers, turkey, and Canada goose.

Then there are the insects and arachnids, which bring us to the beautiful butterflies that compete with the hummers for nectar and the fireflies at night. The add color and movement to the landscape that cannot be compared to anything else!

I don’t have to travel hundreds of miles to see Nature in all of her glory.

All I have to do is step out the back door!

Good morning Richard. As usual, your poetry sets the tone for your post and it's all good. Wonderful pictures and amazing variety. I have many new friends (or enemies) too. Most notably are the bears and coyotes.

Richard, we also live in a subdivision. A couple of weeks ago we had a Raccoon who decided to move into my workshop. We are now going through a 17 year cycle from a Cicada invasion. Isn't nature great?

We have many different birds that visit us during times of the year. They love our bird feeder. However, our cat loves it, too.

Great pictures Richard! You're lucky to have such a variety of wild life right in your own backyard. I'll get the occasional deer, but that's about it.

I live in a Natural wildlife corridor that goes on for thousands of miles in either direction. Everything travels it like a freeway and I like it too

Richard -- that is a great sales pitch for anyone considering moving to your area, that all those life forms are available in one's own backyard!  (Unless, of course, if you don't like your nature that close!)

Amazing what you can find in your own backyard, isn't it, so I'll make an effort to discover what you have already done.

Richard, I wish everyone held the same perspective … they are sharing their world with US and we must respect them all.  I am to the point where I put spiders back outside. I have so much respect for life!

Great pictures, I love taking pictures of wildlife in the area whenever I get the opportunity. I got a picture of a Gila Monster recently when waiting for an appraiser. I shared the picture with the buyers who are nature lovers and they enjoyed seeing it. I always use pictures of the birds and wildlife on my listings.

I think you have a different, and even wider, variety of critters than we do here in cold and snowy North Idaho.

We see deer, coyotes, and sometimes a moose or a few elk in the pasture outside our house. Two weeks ago a bear made a dash across the field. But even though they live here, I've never seen a whole cougar (just a tail disappearing off the side of the road), nor more than the face of a young racoon, peering at me from behind a tree trunk. Perhaps my noisy dogs keep them away.

Rabbits and turtles appear - but not often, and I nearly stepped on a garter snake one day.

My husband feeds a flock of blue jays - and they become VERY demanding if he isn't outside on time in the morning!

Then there are the turkeys. They aren't native here, but fish & game planted them and they've become a nuisance at homes that don't have dogs to send them flying away. (My dogs think it's great fun!)

Whatever comes into view - I always feel privileged when I see wildlife.

Richard,

What a clever post. In my neighborhood there are birds, squirrels, armadillos, bats, bobcats, foxes and coyotes!
