Bald Eagles Doing Well in the Lakestates. Doing Well in Lake Yellowstone Too!!
I DIDN'T GET A PHOTO BUT I SURELY DO REMEMBER IT!!
This reminded me of one of my fondest memories of fishing for Cutthroat Trout in Yellowstone Lake.
The catch limit in the lake was 16 inches or LESS. Yes, LESS. The regulations there is to keep the large fish for BREEDERS. It works. The lake teems with fish although catching one of 16 inches or LESS was harder than expected.
I got lucky and caught a Cutthroat of about 20 inches. Yes, I had to throw it back. Even if the fish is fatally wounded by the hook, they must be released. Fact is, they are forage for other wildlife. The limit was 2 fish in your posession. Our practice was to catch 2 fish each, go back to the camp, cook the trout, eat them and then back out to catch 2 more for dinner. We practically lived on Cutthroat Trout for 3 weeks.
So, there we were sitting in a boat, watching my dead fish float atop the water when a huge BALD EAGLE swooped down from a tree top on the shore, picked the fish up in his/her talons and flew up and off. That fish probably weighed in at about 2.5 lbs. Yet, there was that magnificent bird flying off with it. Enjoy lunch Mr. Bald Eagle.
A sight I'll never forget.

Bald Eagles Doing Well in the Lakestates
When I was young Bald Eagles were very rare to see, and were nearly extinct throughout the United States. This was due to a pesticide called DDT, once this was banned, the recovery began.
Now we see Eagles everywhere we go in the Northern States, They are a very hardy bird, enduring harsh weather, eating anything including roadkill and handouts from fishermen. And with a lifespan of over 30 years they have recovered quite nicely.
