Bald Eagles Doing Well in the Lakestates. Doing Well in Lake Yellowstone Too!!

I DIDN'T GET A PHOTO BUT I SURELY DO REMEMBER IT!!

This reminded me of one of my fondest memories of fishing for Cutthroat Trout in Yellowstone Lake.

The catch limit in the lake was 16 inches or LESS.  Yes, LESS.  The regulations there is to keep the large fish for BREEDERS.  It works.  The lake teems with fish although catching one of 16 inches or LESS was harder than expected.

I got lucky and caught a Cutthroat of about 20 inches.  Yes, I had to throw it back.  Even if the fish is fatally wounded by the hook, they must be released.  Fact is, they are forage for other wildlife.   The limit was 2 fish in your posession.  Our practice was to catch 2 fish each, go back to the camp, cook the trout, eat them and then back out to catch 2 more for dinner.  We practically lived on Cutthroat Trout for 3 weeks.

So, there we were sitting in a boat, watching my dead fish float atop the water when a huge BALD EAGLE swooped down from a tree top on the shore, picked the fish up in his/her talons and flew up and off.  That fish probably weighed in at about 2.5 lbs.  Yet, there was that magnificent bird flying off with it.  Enjoy lunch Mr. Bald Eagle.

A sight I'll never forget.

Bald Eagles Doing Well in the Lakestatesbald eagle

When I was young Bald Eagles were very rare to see, and were nearly extinct throughout the United States.  This was due to a pesticide called DDT, once this was banned, the recovery began.

Now we see Eagles everywhere we go in the Northern States, They are a very hardy bird, enduring harsh weather, eating anything including roadkill and handouts from fishermen. And with a lifespan of over 30 years they have recovered quite nicely.

How cool to see!  What a sight that must have been!

And that this DDT myth is still floating about is amazing.  Every study conducted vidicated DDT as regards eagle deaths.

Lenn- we did a lot of catch and release fishing in the lakes and you made a very good point... even if the fish is wounded, they are forage for others.  Wow... what a Kodak (I guess they don't have those anymore) moment!  I need to get back to fishing because I do miss it.

Jay.  The "studies" are merely a reflection of whose paying for that study.  Studies said to use DDT in Africa to eliminate mosquitoes.  It worked.  Then they said "no DDT".  Well the mosquitoes are back and children are dying.

The solution???  Some mosquitoe nets contributed by Bill Gates.  HA!  I predict that the mosquitoes will win.

Carol.  It's an wonderful sight for sure.

Kathy.  I'm taking the day to clean out my vehicle and put new line on my flyrod.

Sally and David.  Oh, my goodness.  I love adventure.

South Africa decided to ignore the DDT ban years ago and their malaria rates plummeted dramatically.  Lesson learned.

Banning DDT has killed 10s of millions of people.  But not mosquitos.

Thanks for the Reblog Lenn, I love your fishing story, seems like such a waste to have to throw back all of the big fish until you consider the genetics of this system.  Kind of like the way we cut the smaller trees rather than the larger ones in an effort to let the faster growing, higher quality trees repopulate the forest.

Bob.  I compared the practice in Yellowstone with that of Virginia/Maryland.  There, we could only keep "under 16 inch fish".  Here, we can only keep "over 14 inch fish".  Yellowstone has an abundance of fish to catch.  MD and VA? Good fish very scarce.

Good morning Lenn,

I came over from Kathy's post this morning and can see why she picked your post! Loved your story! When we went to Alaska we saw so many Bald Eagles. I will never forget seeing them perched on trees just sitting there like ornaments on a Christmas tree perfectly spaced! Kathy is right no one re-blogs a post better than Lenn!

So glad to hear that there is an upsurge in the population of bald eagles! So important that DDT is banned-it has impacted the ecosystem wherever it has been sprayed.  But the mosquitos are resistent!

Lenn, I have one instance like yours where I seemingly could have reached out and touched one in the wild.  Magnificent is an understatement and I'm happy to report I've seen them from Alaska to here, virtually in my backyard, and several States in between.

Dorie.  Thanks.  Some folks just direct the reader to the original.  I love to expand and add a bit of my own perspective.

Sharon.  That bird earned it's lunch.

Joanna.  I'm not quite convinced that DDT was the culpret or was it civilization eradicating their territory?

Kevin.  Indeed.  I've seen eagles, falcons, etc. across the country.

I live on 5 acres and while we don't see eagles here, it is common to see redtail hawks. The other night one swooped down into the yard and got something. We couldn't tell what it was but then flew off with his dinner. I can only imagine what the sight of the eagle doing the same looked like.

I have not fished for trout since I left Maryland. Kind of nice being able to catch your dinner while enjoying the great outdoors. That is real take out!

Gary.  Maryland to me is Largemouth water, or in some places, Smallmouth.  But, they're rarely keepers.

In Yellowstone, the fish are so abundant, we at Butthroat trout 3 times a day.
