Roeland Park Aquatic Center

An air-supported dome covers the main pool at the aquatic center from September through May, making this competitive facility available for year-round use. About Mid-May, the Aquatic Center is closed for a couple weeks; crews remove the dome and the facility becomes "open air." The dome fabric weighs 6,800 lbs; 30 to 40 people, working on tarps temporarily covering the pool are required to handle the dome.
Without the dome, Roeland Park Aquatic Center becomes a theme park. The main pool is joined by other facilities which are operated only during the summer months.

Each year, after Labor Day, the Roeland Park Aquatic Center is again closed for about two weeks so the dome can be reinstalled.
The City of Roeland Park and Johnson County Park joined resources to create the Roeland Park Aquatic Center as a complex occupying approximately 4 acres. The center officially opened on September 20, 1997.
