Measuring the Forest in Gogebic County Michigan

Gogebic County, Michigan

These are a few shots from a recent trip we took to the Northern tip of Michigan for a 400000 acre inventory and appraisal.

Lots of bald eagles up here, but they are generally shy about getting their pictures taken.

The timber in this stand is rather small, but the

quality is consistently rather good, a tribute to the previous corporate owners.

I always enjoy the quality timber we see in the UP of Michigan.

We are always finding scraps of History out in the forest, I wonder who built this bridge, what happened to it, and why it was never rebuilt?

Last but not least, it always helps to have an old forester around to ensure that the quality in the inventory stays tip top, that the data gets back to the office quickly and the project gets done On Time.

I hope you enjoyed a small glimpse into a timber cruise, or inventory.

Bob

Why wasn't the old bridge rebuilt?  Because it would never meet today's government regs.  What else???

Thanks Joe!

Lenn, Govt regs could be the problem.  Of course often in these rural areas there are not enough people living on the other side to make it worth the expense to replace a bridge after one washes out, the few people on the other side drive a bit further and use a different bridge.  Sometimes these bridges were just put in for a specific purpose like extracting minerals or timber, and once the work is done the bridge is used elsewhere.

Hi Bob, Thanks for giving us a glimpse of what your day looks like. The old bridge was charming and thought provoking at the same time. I'm glad that you have become involved with Active Rain. You have made me more aware of the need for woodland management. I hope that you have a great day.

Our oldest son graduated from Michigan Tech up there at the base of the Keewanee peninsula. We had many great vacations wandering around Copper Harbor, Barraga, Houghton & Hancock, Lake of the woods and Ironwood. There is a lot of history up there, beautiful country and friendly people.

thanks
