10 Things to Do While in San Francisco for Inman Connect

Services for Real Estate Pros with Quantum Leads

San Francisco boasts a variety of attractions – some tourist-laden and others that are hidden gems. Don’t miss out on this great list of things to do during your downtime while you are at the Inman Connect Conference at the Hilton Union Square in July!

1) House of Nanking

If you’re jonesing for some Chinese food, unlike any you’ve ever had in your life we might add, while you’re in San Francisco be sure to stop by House of Nanking. Tucked away between the Financial District and Chinatown, House of Nanking is considered the premier Chinese eatery in San Francisco. If you are going to stop by, be prepared to wait – House of Nanking is known for having a line stretching out the door.  Stick around. The food is well worth the wait. When you go in, ditch the menu and just tell them how hungry you are— They’ll know just what to bring you. The ambience adds to the feel: eating is family-style for your group and you’ll be seated with strangers grouped together at various tables. Don’t miss out on House of Nanking while you are in San Francisco.

2) Marin Headlands

Looking to get a more iconic scenic view of San Francisco? Go check out theMarin Headlands! Located north of San Francisco, across the Golden Gate Bridge, the Marin Headlands are the choice location for postcard-like views. Go for an early morning hike here, and you may get to see the clouds dance around, enveloping the natural landscape and the iconic bridge. Get back in touch with nature, if only for a moment. You’ll be glad you did. Admittance to the park is free, however make sure you have cash to pay the toll to get back across the Golden Gate Bridge.

3) Ferry to Sausalito

Sausalito is known as the town on the other side of the bridge. But this sleepy town is more than just a lesser counterpart of San Francisco – it’s a quaint community where hillsides are littered with residents who call this eight miles of beach their home. Sausalito stands in stark contrast to San Francisco; life here has a decidedly slower pace. But don’t take our word for it – catch the ferry, and see for yourself!

4) Sunset Tours of Alcatraz

Alcatraz has a storied past of being the former most secure prison in the world. Tails of harrowing escapes and later assertions of hauntings have added layers of mystery to this lonely island. If you’re in San Francisco, you should not pass up the opportunity to see it for yourself. Alcatraz Cruises offers a variety of times to take you to the island. Whether you want to tour in the morning, or go for a sunset tour in the evening, make sure you see Alcatraz during your stay.

5) The Wilson & Wilson Detective Agency, aka The Wilson Bar

The Wilson & Wilson Detective Agency is a bar unlike any other. Cleverly disguised as a Private Detective Agency, this bar has quietly made a name for itself. Don’t expect food here – drinks only. Make sure to make a reservation online before hand to get the secret password; no password, no reservations, no entry. The ambiance inside is that of a speakeasy – dark and complimented with light music. The menus come in manila folders, dressed up as case files. But let’s not forget the real reason you come here: the drinks. The bartenders are true mixologists. Follow their lead, and they’ll keep the drinks coming. We recommend trying the flight of 3 drinks for $30 for the best sampling. And don’t dare order anything not appearing on the menu, just experience what the barkeep recommends if you are unsure.

6) Marrakech

Marrakech is no longer the best-kept secret in Moroccan cuisine. Set in the Tenderloin District, Marrakech is just a two-minute walk from the Hilton at Union Square. Belly-dancing and live music are mainstays at Marrakech, making this a true Moroccan experience. The menu is a mixed bag of options, with chicken, lamb, hen, hare, and more. To top it off, Marrakech is serious about their wine: whether you want to stay with the normal reds and whites, or be adventurous and try some Moroccan fine wine, they have it all.

7) Primavera

Primavera Tamales is a must, while you’re at the Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market. They have the standard tamale and burrito options, but the real secret here is their chilaquiles. One bite of their delectable chilaquiles, and you will know why Primavera is the go-to vendor at the farmer’s market. Also a plus: they have several organic and non-dairy options! This place has something for everyone; you’ll be glad you came!

8) Half Moon Bay Lighthouse

Have a day to spare? Then take a day trip down to Half Moon Bay to see the iconic lighthouses dotting the coast of breath taking beautiful scenic Highway 1. These picturesque lighthouses add a serene quality to Half Moon Bay, and have long been the inspiration for landscape painters. While you’re there, don’t miss out on eating at Sam’s Chowder House. It may just be the finest lobster roll you’ve ever eaten.

9) Banksy

The enigmatic graffiti-artist Banksy has become something of a staple of the greater San Francisco area, and internationally as well. His signature styling is to reimagine art/graffiti that is all ready in the public domain. When you see an original Banksy, you’ll know. Strangely enough, however, Banksy does not seem to want the notoriety. He is not available for pictures, and nobody knows quite what he looks like. When you’re roaming the streets of San Francisco, keep your eyes peeled for a Banksy artpiece! The Peace Love Doctor work of art was created in 2010 and appears in Chinatown in San Francisco.
