One of the first questions that I hear about Latin America is: "How safe will I be if I travel to a country in Latin America?"
Naturally safety is important to all of us and we are constantly reading things in the mainstream media and hearing stories from friends and acquaintances. Almost every article or story relates some horrible tale. You just don't hear many of the good stories. Millions of citizens form the US and Canada visit other countries all the time with no problems but any time there is an incident it receives our full attention.
I strongly believe that it is no more dangerous to be in Mexico or any other country than it is to stay in the United States or Canada. I am in Mexico now and have been for months, I've interviewed hundreds of ex-patriots here and from other countries and most of them comment that they feel just as safe in Mexico and the rest of Latin America as anywhere else in the world. Of course, the media and people find it more fascinating to relate stories of dangers and problems rather than true life.
As an interesting exercise, look at the headlines about violence in the United States for a week and in your mind decide whether you would want to visit if you were from some small peaceful town elsewhere in the world. I know lots of people from other countries that are terrified of visiting the US.
Of course there are dangers everywhere in the world today, it is important to be careful about the places you visit and live and to try to avoid being a victim. I will give some tips in another post.
