FAQs - What About Medical Care in Latin America?

One of the most important concerns that I hear about living or even visiting countries is about medical care.  Everyone asks:  Can I get medical care?  How good is the medical care?  How much does it cost?

There is excellent medical care available in Latin America.  The prices are low and the care is outstanding.  In most countries, the cost of care is ⅓ to ⅕ the price that you will incur in the US.  And Cuba is even 96% cheaper than the US.

Did you know that medical care in the US is the world’s highest per capita and takes a huge chunk of our GNP.  Doctors are paid much more (although lots of that goes to malpractice insurance and lawsuits), drug prices are higher, hospital costs are much higher, and many more expensive diagnostic tests are prescribed in the US.

Your first visit to a physician in Latin America will produce some pleasant surprises.  The hospitality of the region is evident in the care and consideration you will be shown.  The doctors take much more time with you, ask more questions and are genuinely concerned.  Every conversation that I have with others living in Latin America results in glowing praise for the medical care.

Recently I went to a doctor in Mexico.  My allergies had turned into an eye infection.  I had a short wait, the doctor checked all my vital signs, examined eyes, ears, nose, throat, breathing and more.  Then she asked lots of questions for a complete medical history. Finally she explained her findings and told me exactly how she wanted to treat my “severe infection”. I have never found a doctor who was more careful in treatment and in making certain that I understood everything and that I had no unanswered questions.  The total cost of my doctors visit was $35 pesos (about $2.90 in US currency).  I did pay for injections, pills and eye drops at the affiliated pharmacy.

Another aspect of medical care in Latin America is medical tourism.  Visitors are traveling to various countries from all over the world to get procedures that they can not afford in their home countries.  These visitors arrive knowing that the quality and cost of care will be very excellent.

Medial facilities, care, doctors and insurance will vary in each country so it is important to get the facts on any country that you choose.
