Meet my Dog, Beau, My Canine Assistant!

Thanks for your comment, Deborah.  I missed one of the main reasons I like to have him with me. He does not ask "Are we almost there?" nor does he ask to stop to go to the bathroom.

Kathy -- Beau does go to the driver's seat when we leave him.

Beau knows some words that are important to him. He knows the word "deer," "cat" and "rabbit." If I say one of those words, his ears pick up and he jerks his head around in all directions looking for it.

He also knows the word "ball." He then finds it and brings it to me. If I am carrying a racquet, he puts the ball on the racquet and waits for me to hit it so he can chase it. He gets a charge out of stopping it as quickly as possible.

Thanks, Marte! Beau has a marvelous personality. He tries to please all the time. He knows hand signals and will follow or go in the direction where I point.

BTW, I really enjoy the informational e-mails I get from you.

Thanks for your comment, Kathleen. We are lucky to have Beau. It is really fun to have him around. He goes with me when I show clients vacant land. He makes friends instantly and is entertaining.

Thanks, Andrea -- Technically he is my wife's dog but she can't take him to work. I do the dog-sitting and he would never forgive me if I didn't let him go along with me.

Endre -- Beau "comes unglued" when we pass cattle.  He went totally wild when we passed cowboys working with cattle on Williamson Valley Road at Walnut Creek.

There were a couple of dogs who were helping gather the calves and herd them into the enclosure. I think Beau felt left out.

Much of the area I work is open range where the cattle cross the roads.

Beau made his last trip to the vet last week. He was 12 years old. He was too old to run, jump and play. He was a great assistant and my constant companion for 6 years.

He was good at frisbee and loved to chase a tennis ball. He was good at herding cattle. He tried to herd Mule Deer and Antelope. He was fast but not fast enough for them.
