Mixed Metals in the Bathroom – Should You or Should You Not?

Home Stager with Foxy Interiors Inc. Lake Mary Florida

Are you considering a bathroom remodel?  How do you decide which elements should be in what finishes?  If you have a bathroom which contains shiny chrome faucets in the tub as well as the showerhead, should you deviate from these finishes and start mixing your metals for shower hooks, cabinet knobs, mirrors and the sink?

I’ve provided two photos below.  In one example, it has mixed metal finishes of shiny chrome, oil-rubbed bronze and chrome with gold in the sink faucet.  The second example is shiny chrome and brushed nickel.  Which one do you like better?  Is it the mixed metals or the silver found in all elements?

In a small bathroom, when you stand at the door and can see the entire room, I highly recommend having all your metals in the same finish.  Your fixtures will unify the space and a cohesive look will be achieved. In a larger space, you might be able to pull it off because there is separation amongst the room.  You can also bring in accessories to pull the look together.  For all intent purposes though, I recommend one finish for one room.  I personally just think it takes on a cleaner look.

“Foxy Interiors Inc. made our kitchen and living room redesign a reality. They were wonderful to work with every step of the way. We met with them on site to discuss our desire for a design “reset” and to review our options for reviving the space. Our home has modern lines but it lost its luster in a sea of dated wall and cabinet colors and clutter. They took in to account our likes and dislikes and offered many options for our consideration from paint colors and fabrics to finishes and textures. They developed a clear estimate per service offered. Their suggestions for enhancements made the biggest difference in the outcome of the redesign. For example, crown molding on the cabinets and an accent color for the breakfast nook resulted in an upscale redesign. We will definitely call on them again for their design and renovation expertise. We love our new space and highly recommend Foxy Interiors Inc. for your transformation! “

Interesting, not only do you have mixed metals, but you have very definite mixed styles.

Know what drives me crazy Marie, when I see new builds with beautiful, higher end fixtures in the same finish, BUT the striker plate and door hinges are of different metals, it looks so tacky!

Hey Roger, I couldn't agree with you more.  Is it traditional or modern?  Very eclectic - when planning to go for a 'certain' look, it is imperative to remember what you already have that's existing and to either work off it or go with every element in the room.  Thanks for dropping by and commenting.  Have a wonderful weekend!

Bette -- Pet peeve of mine too.  There are so many 'builder grade standards' that the end result (vision) is not totally achieved.  Yes, it looks awkward.  When pulling together a scheme, you have to go from the details and follow it through to the goal.

I don't like the look of mixed metals. It almost looks like they remodeled at different times. Like the second color of fixtures was an afterthought.

Hi Rob, yes, this is the second renovation on the bathroom. I had a conversation with the customer too. Best to stay with the existing finishes or change every piece of hardware for a unified look. BTW we missed you at the CFRI general meeting. I hope you were doing something fun.
