By now most know that your site will be found by the long tail keywords. But I still struggle with coming up with relevant keywords to build a page (or blog) about.
I nice free tool to use is at http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/. This will allow you to insert a seed word and see just how many people are searching for this keyword and related words per day. The numbers are estimates so you need to use some discretion. For instance "arizona real estate agent" is searched 31 times a day. The tool then lists related keywords and tehri numbers also.
Now that you have a list of keywords that you may or may not have thought about before you need to figure out if it is worth building a page (or blogging) about. Don't get me wrong. You should always focus on building a page (or blogging) based on providing information for your visitors first and foremost. On the other hand you want people to find your information also.
So open Google and perform a search for your keyword(s) in parantheses. This will let you know how many pages Google has indexed with this term on it in the upper right hand of the page.
Next step is to search:
allintitle:"your keyword term here"
Google will bring back the number of pages that have your keyword term in the title.
Now search:
allinanchor:"your keyword term here"
Google will bring back the number of pages with a text link on the page with that keyword term.
This is going to tell you how many pages are at least somewhat optimized for your keyword term. If the numbers are in the 1,000-2,000 range then you have a shot at having your web page found. The more relevant the serach engines view your site the higher you will appear. You still need to follow the advice from others around here about building the page appropriately inlcuding using it in the title, a few times on the page, and in a text link as well. I don't want to get into how to build a page, and instead keep it at finding keywords for the great content you are writing.
Obviously the less websites optimized for your keyword and the more searches that pop up in the fee Wordtracker tool the better. There is no magic number though.
