Get Lost at Ridgway CO State Park...Mountain Views and So Much More

Get Lost at Ridgway CO State Park...Mountain Views and So Much More. Ridgway State Park sits at the base of the San Juan Mountains and this means the park has some of the most fantastic scenery around.

Ridgway Reservoir alone covers over 1,000 acres. The park stretches for about five miles into the Uncompahgre River Valley. The reservoir was designed to catch spring water and runoff snow melt from the mountains as part of the Colorado River Storage Project. The reservoir dam was finished in 1987 and this is when a lot of land was eventually covered by water. This valley and surrounding area is also where the John Wayne movie True Grit was filmed.

The park has three areas. There's Dutch Charlie, which was the first area of the park to open in 1989. Camping, boat ramps and the beach are located here. Camping sites are also available.

Pa-Co-Chu-Puk is located below the dam. Pa-Co-Chu-Puk is an Indian term for Cow Creek. Fishing and hiking are the most popular activities here. This is river fishing with flies and lures and it's catch and release only. The fishing is excellent. Developed camp sites with hookups are available.

Dallas Creek is a day use area. Hiking, fishing, picnicking and nature watching are favorite pastimes here.

The reservoir is great for boating, water skiing, sailing, fishing and windsurfing. Swimmers can enjoy the beach at the Dutch Charlie site. Hiking trails are available at all areas of the park. Dutch Charlie has the visitor's center and this is the place to get more information.

Getting lost at Ridgway State Park with the mountain views and so much more wouldn't be a bad thing to do. The park is just a few miles outside of Ridgway. It's a bit further to Montrose, but either place is good if you prefer staying in a motel to camping.

Debbie, I could most definitely get lost in Ridge Way State Park of Colorado.... I would love to explore the 1,000 acres unless that is the lake area alone...lol

Your pictures capture the purity and tranquil beauty of the mountains and lower valley's which would be a wonderful vacation destination.

Hi, Bob...the lake is 1,000 acres, but there's also around 14 miles of hiking trails.

The views are wonderful aren't they, Donna. Come to visit and we'll explore the part together.

Roger you could always do a driving tour. Every drive is a scenic drive in this area.

Debbie, The park looks really nice and as you say you could get lost in the views alone. I imagine it is very busy in the summer months.
