Hello,

Every once in a while you need to make sure that you test your real estate web pages for broken links.   The reason for this is that search engines do not favor websites with outdated information.  A site with broken hyperlink is an indication of old data.  So if you make sure that all the links on your pages are valid, it will improve your chances of being ranked higher by search engines.   The good thing about this is that it is easy to detect broken links using some free tools available over the Internet.

Here is how to find the links that are causing trouble:

Method 1:  The folks who work on the HTML standard have created a tool to check your pages against dead links.  You can go to the web page below and type in your web page URL.

    http://validator.w3.org/checklink

The code validator will analyse your web site and tell you if it finds links that are no longer valid.
You can check the box at "Check linked documents recursively, recursion depth:"  and set it to 1 to start with.
Once that pass is finished and you have eliminated all the dead links, you can start a new pass and increase it the recursive depth to 2 and maybe 3 later.
However as you re-check your website with the tool and ask it to check for more sub-levels, each pass will take longer and longer to execute because it will search more web pages.

Method 2:  You can also use the  Meta Tag Analyzer on the following site and look for the section of the report called "URLs found in the page: URL - Times Found".  This can be used to check one page at a time.

No one knows for sure how the various search engine algorithms work and how much weight is attributed to each optimization technique, however many SEO specialists will recommend that you keep your pages in good shape by updating the links that no longer work and check your site regularly.

So if you find broken links you can update them with a new location or simply remove them from your HTML code.

Happy Search Engine Optimization everyone!

Mario - thanks for sharing this info, and the links.  There's nothing more frustrating than coming upon a well-written article or post, etc., and then finding the links don't work.  Thanks for sharing these tips!

I just ran my website through the link validator and everything checked out OK. I was kind of surprised because I have so many links to different sites. Now that I have the link I'll put it on my monthly website maintenance checklist.
