What Do You Do?

What Do You Do?

I love the Chevrolet truck commercial.  The one where they are having a block party and one neighbor asks the new guy, “What do you do?”  He does this life-flashes-before-his-eyes thing and has trouble answering the question.  He doesn’t say, “I sell houses” or “I’m a cop” or “I’m a nurse”…you get my point.  If you haven’t seen the commercial, you can find it on You Tube.  It will come right up if you go to You Tube and search Chevrolet what do you do or click on the link I've provided.

In my youth, I would answer that exact question in a matter of fact manner.  I’m a wrestler.  I’m a DJ.  I’m a soldier.  I’m a husband.  I’m a cop.  I’m a Dad.  I’m a Realtor.  At some point, you grow up a little more andValet Real Estate Services wonder…Who am I?  That’s why I love the commercial.

Sudden thought!  Do men and women look at this the same way?  I’m looking forward to some feedback on that point!

As I matured, I found myself hesitating when I answer that question.  What do you do Vic?  I help people accomplish their goals regarding where they want to live.  I’m a writer.  Not yet an author, but I hope to change that.  I’m an avid reader.  I’m a good friend.  I’m an outdoorsman.  I’m an archer.  I’m a man of faith.  Who AM I?  …I’m Vic!

Are you comfortable in your own skin?  Are you doing everything you want to do?  I realized last month I wasn’t.  I sold a beautiful condo in Long Beach during the weeks leading up to the Long Beach Grand Prix.  One day, I got detoured through downtown, down the straightaway and ON the beach.  It felt like a scene from a Hollywood comedy.  I was actually grinning the entire time.  I’ve always meant to go to the Grand Prix.  I still haven’t gone.  I need to change that.

The Aquarium of the Pacific is there too.  THAT is absolutely something I’ve always meant to do.  It’s open every day of the year except Christmas and the Grand Prix race days.  I’m pleased to tell you I went to the aquarium for the first time two weeks ago.  It was amazing!  It was four hours of beauty…and air conditioning!  It was a perfect get-away.

Is there a little indulgence you have always meant to do?  Visit Yellowstone?  Get a tattoo?  Have a party around a firepit at the beach?  I want you to do something for yourself; just do it.  Over the next couple of days, figure out exactly how you are going to do that one thing you have always meant to do.  I would absolutely love it if you tell me; what do you do!

Good post. Think I will spend the day in the pool. At least until the phone rings.

Them: "So Erick, what do you do?"

Me: "I help folks get their dream homes with low or NO down payment.  I also help folks sell their homes for top dollar."

Them: "So you're a Ril-uh-ter."

Me: "I'm also a husband, a dad, a private pilot, an open ocean sailor, and a golfer.  I support my family and my toys by helping nice folks buy and sell homes.  By the way, WHERE DO YOU LIVE?"  (Turn the subject back around to THEM.)

Me: "Tell me more...."

Me: "Tell me more about what you like most about your house?"

Me: "What would you want in a house that's new to you, that you don't have now?"

Wow what an inspiration post! I love the thought of "what do you do?" meaning more than just what my career is. Yes we are Realtors but we are so much more!! Sometimes you truck along for a paycheck and forget how to really enjoy it. We work hard for our money and you are right it's about time we do something for ourselves to enjoy!

Wonderful post! It is easy to get caught up in day to day concerns and forget to step back and breathe, let alone do something you want to do! But when one does step back... Life, it is a beautiful thing.

Effective add.  What it is saying is their truck is for all aspects of your life and the type of person you are in all situations.  We tend to ID ourselves by our work.  But what I am is a Husband and Father.

I didn't know the commercial so I had to watch it first. We are complex beings, hard to pin down with just one or two lines.

Your post hit home.  So much of what we do is for others but if we don't take care to feed our needs, we become useless to others as well as to ourselves.  Just find what makes you happy and do more of it!

Vic, what a great reminder to not forget to take care of ourselves and our needs.  I try and do something for "me" at least several times a week even if its as simple as sitting down with a good book for an hour or a tlephone visit with a long distance friend or breakfast with my buddies.  It puts a whole different spin on your week and energizes you.

I've never seen the Chevrolet commercial. I'm going to watch it shortly. My answer to that question is: I change lives thru successful real estate investing.

What a great post! When I get asked that question I usually answer by saying that I "help" people make buying and selling real estate decision. I consider my line of work more of a "service" and "counselling" type rather than "selling"type of work.

What a rare and refreshing perspective! Often people get caught up in identifying with titles; they lose sight of who they wanted to be and have little sense of who they have become. Absolutely-- just do it!

I'm pleased you read the exchanges Sharon.
