U.S. Golf Open in Delaware County PA On Father’s Day
The U.S. Golf Open has made its way again to Delaware County PA. For the 5th time in the history of golf the Merion Golf Club located in Ardmore, Haverford Township is the host to this event that golfers aspire to be a participant.
Merion Golf Club in Delaware County opened in 1896 and has been the golf course used for the US Open in 1934, 1950, 1971, 1981 and this year 2013. The final round of golf in this tournament happens on Father’s Day every year, something I did not know.
Delaware County and the surrounding areas have been preparing for this event for some time. Coverage of the preparation for the Open and the actual coverage of the event have dominated the local news stations on TV and on the radio.
The U.S. Open is not only a big event for the golfers but it is also a big opportunity for locals to have a windfall of money from the many visitors and attention that has come to this area. We have heard stories of people renting out their homes close to Merion for amazing amounts of money while they have stayed in a hotel during the tournament. The evening news shows people offering parking to visitors; some holding signs saying the fees are helping to defray the costs of their children’s education.
As the Open comes to a close and the winner is to be determined, it was interesting for me to hear the stories of how the Merion Golf Club, though one of the smallest in acres, only 111 acres, is one tough course that offers many challenges to golfers due to its well thought out design and use of land. Another interesting tidbit about this piece of real estate is the forward thinking of the Merion Golf Club in their use of many grasses that require less watering.
Well Happy Father’s Day to all of you who enjoy this sport that involves a little ball and a lot of practice on beautiful pieces of real estate! (Rooting for Phil!)
