River Low

One of the most popular tourist attractions is the "Animas river.

This year due to low amounts of snow, the river is already low.  That means that rafting, kayaking and even fishing (Durango has Gold Medal trout fishing) are less effective than usual.

A few weeks ago while it was still possible to see snow on the mountain peaks, we watched a rafts bottom out as it attempted to go downstream.

If we think that people are inconvenienced by the low water,  imagine how the fish feel when they cannot navigate their usual paths.

We need water now and many are concentrating on positive thinking about rain.

In 2002 we lived through another drought.  It was a terrifying experience as forest fires consumed thousands of acres in the area. (the Missionary Ridge fire)

Rain is definitely the answer.  Dry is alright, this dry is not. Rivers were not designed to run low for long periods of time.

These low water levels really effect the trout. It stresses them out to where they don't want to play with fisherman. We've had a series of thunderstorms come through our area. We got more lightning than rain, and you know what that can mean. We are keeping a positive attitude like you mentioned, but it's dry and hot and that means that fires are on their way to our area. Many years ago, we almost had to evacuate our home due to a fire. One wind shift and the area I know as Cedar Mesa, and home, would have been gone. That was the McGruder fire. I believe it was 2007.

Well we are praying for gentle healing rains for all of Colorado.  We were here when Missionary Ridge kept everyone on edge for weeks.  The guys/gals who work to contain those fires are amazing heros who do absolutely incredible work.
