But, oh my, we have no place to live! We sold our house here in Weston and are looking forward to having a new home in Amelia Island but we want to rent for a few years before we decide to buy. It seems that the rental market in that area has dried up for long-term rentals.
We are currently camped out at the Marriott Residence Inn in Weston while we finish our business - listings that must close, buyers still looking around trying to make a decision, etc. We had every intention of moving in June but it now looks like August before we can get going; meanwhile, the few rentals that we found most appealing are now gone and there just doesn't seem to be anything on the market.
Of course, I always tell our customers who call for rentals: you have to wait until the month before you plan on moving because most rentals do not come on that far in advance - but I just cannot take my own advice - we are now panicking! If any of you Amelia Island realtors read this, please keep us in mind and let us know if you have anything beginning Aug or even Sept.
Following is a summary of our needs/wishes:
My family is all in Atlanta except for my sister and her family who all live in Winter Haven. My husband’s sister lives in Gainesville. No one ever wants to come down this far south so we feel that Amelia/Fernandina would be an ideal location for us. My aunt & uncle used to own a 4-bedroom condo on the beach and a 2-bedroom villa, both in the Plantation, and I have visited them there so I am a little bit familiar with the area but it has been several years since I have been there. The couple I knew from church in Ft. Lauderdale moved to Amelia Island a few years ago and they love it. He is also a realtor so he has sent me some information on rentals as well. Unfortunately, we didn’t jump on a few things that would have been perfect for us.
I have been a realtor since 1980 and a broker since 1984. I grew up in Coral Gables, graduated from U of GA in 1970 and lived in Atlanta for a while before moving back to Coral Gables. We moved to Weston in 1995. I actually quit real estate in 2004 and opened a gourmet kitchen & gift shop in Weston. The economy forced me to close it in 2010 at which time I went back into real estate.
We also have property in St. Mary’s, GA in Cumberland Harbor but we bought that in 2005 at the top of the market and it has since tanked so we are just hanging onto that, hoping that it will come back in our lifetime. Because we lost so much money both in my retail store and in our real estate investments we are not ready to buy again but hopefully will either be able to buy or build in the next 5 years; meanwhile, we are looking for something to rent unfurnished.
We are very meticulous and would treat any property we live in as our own. I find nothing more depressing than seeing how some people live in clutter and mess and I can assure you that we do not live like that. You could easily drop in on us any time unannounced and not be disappointed. We do have two little Shih Tzu’s – about 15 lbs each. We will be more than willing to put up a pet deposit. We would ideally be able to rent something for $2200 or less and we want to be in a good safe area.
