My Treo - Should I put her down, or let her die with dignity?

My poor, raggedy little Treo 650.  The antenna-like thingy is loose and can be popped out.  I lose my stylus at *least* once a day.  I recently had to replace the SD card because I lost my old one after it became disengaged from the slot (I still haven't figured that one out).  It constantly loses the connection during hot syncs, so it usually takes two or three tries to get all of my info over.  The phone restarts at random moments, but never while I'm on a call.  Occasionally it doesn't bother to let me know someone's calling and will go straight to voicemail or do a quick half-ring and go to VM.  Sometimes the touch screen doesn't work and I have to pop the battery out to restart it in order for it to work again.  And speaking of the battery, just this morning it died after a ten minute conversation even though it was fully charged.  Even my back-up battery has lost it's juice, and I'm not one to overcharge.  And you can forget using the bluetooth for more than twenty minutes if you're plugged into a charger.  It kills all of the phone's juice too.

Imagine if I were rough with the thing and dropped it often?

Although my phone sounds really sad now that I'm seeing it in black and white, I love it.  The fact that it's in dire straits now proves that I'm definitely getting use of it.  I don't have a lot of bells and whistles downloaded to it, but I live by the calendar, calculator, Documents to Go, and email functions.  Since I have so many accessories for it (car charger, international adapters, cradles, etc) I really don't want to switch to a Blackberry and have to start all over.

Now my dilemna is whether I should put her down now or allow her to die peacefully and with dignity.  My service provider, Verzion, currently has online discounts and mail-in rebates for the Treo 700p and 755p.  I've been reading and don't want to hassle with the windows based ones.  Aside from the 700p having the useless antenna-like thingy and the 755p taking min-SD cards, is there really any difference between them that will justify the 755p costing $100 more?  Sure, one is about an ounce lighter, but with all of the junk inside of my purse/briefcase/diaper bag who'll know the difference?  Does anyone know if Palm plans to release a new model soon?  Of course that will decrease the cost of these two models even more.

Decisions, decisions...

Tracy, there is a lawsuit settlement for Treo 650 and 600 owners that have had two replacements or more.  I think you get a free replacement if necessary, or a discount on an upgrade.  Check with Palm.com.  My first 650 died, too, but I only had to replace it once.

Tracy ~ Cute and funny tribute to your loving phone!   I let my phone die out gracefully "like you say". I just upgraded to a blackberry this Christmas. You will see a world of difference. I say it is worth the changing of all the gadgets. If you don't have GPS in your car like me, you will find that this feature is key in our business!   Best of wishes to you and your Treo 650.

If your contract is up with verizon you can leave them and go to cingular and get their treo 750 for $99 with 2 yr activation.  And yes soon as you buy it there will be another model that comes out with all the new bells and whistles, thats whats happened to me. Well good luck, our phone is our life so make it a good one!

P.S. Just wanted to let you know that Verizon's "replacement" phones (if shipped to you) are refurbished phones.

Tracy, Good luck with the hunt. I as well have been waiting to upgrade ( I have to wait till May ). I had a phone stolen from me and T-Mobile gave me another one (Free of charge) however I did have to extend the service to get it. Course I have been with them for 9 years.

I will be looking into the Blackberry or something similar. Staying with T-Mobile cause I have 3000 minutes for $49. and free Long Distance in US and no roaming charges where they have service.

Tracy, have you had to replace your phone 2 or more time?  If so, like the other member stated you can get a 50.00 rebate or something like that.  I received a letter from some law firm in the mail the other day about it.  In the mean time, I think you should upgrade to the 750.  I think lately Blackberry has been having some problems too.  With the Treo you already know the device and the Palm's platform.  Getting another device will increase your learning curve and expense, if you will need other support items.

Don't worry about the future models it will only delay your change over most times it is a test of patience but in the long haul it is worth it. Just do it and get on with business.

Thanks for all of the comments!  I didn't think my thoughts/mini vent would get so much attention so quickly.

Brian/Marvin - Because I bought my phone through Craig's List and not Verizon I didn't think I'd qualify for replacements or discounts.  I got a good deal so it was a risk I was willing to take.  Regardless of what happens I definitely got my money's worth.  But I'll check Palm's website and see what I can find.  Good idea!

Christina - I bought a GPS on Black Friday (can you tell I'm all about a deal?)  Although that is a good feature, our MLS tends to favor Treo's for some reason.  They're always sponsing classes for it.  We're not wireless yet, but I suspect that when we get there Treo's will be supported first.

Scott/Heather/Herb - My Verizon contract ended a while ago.  However I'm not interested in switching because they have the best coverage in the area.  Cingular/AT&T don't have very good coverage outside of the metropolitan area, and I travel outside of it often.  Sprint calls will drop if a leaf blows overhead.  Altell, my old provider, only worked if I sat at a 45 degree angle in the arm chair in my family room, and I've never met a single person in all of the Triangle with T-Mobile.  So I'm guessing they're no better.

Tracy I have the new 755P with verizon.  I really like the phone but even brand-new it has some of the problems you mention.  I had a blackberry prior that was a much more stable phone and the email is easier.  I am still happy I switched to the treo because all my contacts are integrated and I can use the treo as my lock box key.
