What exciting thing did you do on the longest day of the year?
I got to fulfill a childhood wish.
It all started with my son who asked for a Banjo 20 years ago, and I of course obliged. He learned to play it and soon after lost interest, when he built a harp which he learned to play also.
That Banjo was languishing in his homes and later moved around with me. I could not get anyone on Craigslist, or at my yard sale to buy it.
Yesterday, two Bethesda store owners who love music, Edward Compton of Ecker's Clock & Watch Shop and Karre Wienke of Scooters and Boards suggested that I go to The House of Musical Tradition to see if I could trade it in for a ukulele.
I do not know what it is about the sound of the Mandolin that touches my heart. I love listening to it, so I got all excited about the idea. Today, as I walked into the The House of Musical Tradition, David the owner, was walking out. He greeted me and proceeded to help me out. That was great, since I appreciate great customer service.
As he looked over my son's Banjo, he remembered all kind of facts about it. He gave me a price that I considered fair. Needles to say, I was very happy! I thought it was funny that he read my mind and stated that my intention to trade it for a Ukulele is a great idea.
Looking around the store, I had to exercise a lot of self discipline not to purchase other instruments. I love music. I wish I could play a number of instruments.
I am already looking forward to the day that I can take my grand children to The House of Musical Tradition in Takoma Park, MD.
After Justin gave me a demonstration of both the Ukulele and the Mandolin, I chose the latter, because Justin said that it is more suitable to play melodies than just cords. And after all, this was an emotional purchase. I wanted to produce the sounds of my childhood that I loved. Finally, after many years, I fulfilled my wish to own a Mandolin and learn to play it. Now, lets see the response time of a music teacher.
