Those tree limbs will damage your roof!

When builders build homes in a planned community, they usually have a landscaping package that is supposed to dress up the front elevation and make it pretty. Sometimes they do.... but usually they don't give any thought to how close they plant trees to the structure. These things grow up! Here is a good example of why it is important to keep tree limbs from touching your roof surface.

The palm trees were planted too close to the house. It was fine when they were planted, but now they are above the height of the roof and the limbs are touching the shingles. When the wind blows, the limbs rub scrape over the shingles and loosen up the protective granules on the shingle tabs. This will reduce the life of your roof significantly, and the sun will do its thing and bake your shingles to a crisp!

This one is even worse than that. The limbs have been doing this for quite a long time and have even worn through some of the tabs!

This roof will have to be replaced, or at least this section of itwill. The rest of it is in pretty decent shape. It is only 10 years old. What a shame, a little tree

trimming would have prevented this.

Of course I recommended that they remove the one tree that is closest to the house and trim the rest up.

Certainly all these trees are planted too close to the house.

So keep those limbs from rubbing the surface of your roof! You can't see what damage they are doing from ground level.

I grew up in a small town in Indiana. We had a house on a corner lot property. My dad planted  trees closer to the street. He had the where with all to know not to plant too close to the house. He sold the house after mom passed away to a relative. They planted 8 more trees and 3 of those were Christmas firs they recycled. The house has had numerous problems with the septic and the roof because of those trees. When he purchased his next homes if the branches were to close hitting the roof or planted too near, he passed on those homes. He also made the sellers repair the roofs if needed and checked the sewer systems to make sure there was no damage from trees. Can be a very costly mess.

When it grows that large it defeats the purpose - you can't see the planting from inside and the curb appeal is strang with tree trunks that close to the house.

Gene - There were a ton of the granules in the gutter!

Travis - $$$$$ is good! Damaged roof = BAD!

Michael - Hmmm, we don't have that distinction here...

When we got last year free trees from the city for our property my first question to chief gardener was: how far away must the tree be planted to be safe for the house?

The intention for this question was not the roof but the foundation. Because if you plant the tree to close to the house that might harm that part of the house and cause lots of issues.

The limbs and branches are a smaller problem for me because as soon as I hear the slightest scrubbing noise at the roof the part of the limbs is gone.

Bob - Bad boy...lol, you should have listened to the wise men!

Theresa - Your Dad was a wise man!

Hella - You could see the beautiful tree trunks passing by the window  :-)

Way to go Andrea! Hard to see the roots till it's too late sometimes... best to do your homework, right?

Trees are bautiful, but "Pretty is as pretty does," and these don't do anything nice.

We had some trees that were planted near the house when we built in 2005...had to cut the trees back, but will probably have them removed and plant some nice bushes.

Marte - They still would be pretty all trimmed up but... too close to this house!

Kimo - Keep your trees trimmed!

Rebecca - Let me guess.... the builder planted them too close to the house?

Hi Fred,

Not only the tree limbs but the rest of the roof looks like it about at the end of it's life .

Time to think of having the roofing replaced.

Have a good day in the Tampa area.

Best, Clint McKie

Fred - great advice! We don't have palm trees here in the Sierras. We do have very large Ponderosa Pines (planted by Mother Nature) builders often squeeze a house in amongst the trees building the decks around them. Depending on the height and age of the tree this can lead to problems when the wind blows.

Clint - The rest of the roof wasn't too bad. There were issues, but not as bad as the limb area. I recently heard they got estimates as high as 13K to replace that roof! They had pool solar panels to deal with, so I'm sure that didn't help.

Kathie - I had a house built in 2001 where the builder tried to "squeeze it in" between some trees too... I made them remove some of them because it was ridiculous!

Fred, it never struck me to even look at the roof where what appears to be a small tree is brushing up against the shingles.  Thanks so much for bringing it to my attention.

Trees and schrubs to close to the house are bad. I saw a house recently that had a large rose bush that had destroyed the siding while moving with the wind.
