Ahead of schedule and under budget - those will be among the superlatives offered for the Temecula Valley Hospital when it opens in just a few short months. Utilizing innovative construction and scheduling techniques that have attracted visitors from around the world, the hospital will offer a state-of-the-art facility containing 140 private rooms in the 5 story, 178,000 square foot facility. The hospital will also include 20 intensive care units, 40 emergency department bays and 6 surgical suites.
The new hospital will include an innovative Consolidated Treatment Unit where inpatients and outpatients are prepared for and receive procedures --- and that can double as an expanded emergency department when necessary. This Consolidated Treatment Unit will promote faster patient recoveries, as more efficient processes allow nurses and staff to bring care to the patient, rather than the other way around. Nurses can spend more time with their patients when everything is centrally located.
The innovative process has attracted the attention of several Fortune 500 companies, who have come to the site to see for themselves how the team approach has expedited construction of one of the most stringently controlled building types in the country. Companies that have come to Temecula to tour the hospital include Disney, Intel and Google, as well as Loma Linda University Medical Center, health-care representatives from around the country and representatives from China.
This team approach, where all contractors on the project occupy one big room with a countdown clock in one corner and a scheduling wall on prominent display, has also allowed the hospital to be built for roughly $1 million per bed. Compare this to several recently completed facilities that cost between $1.5 and $2 million per bed. And according Project Manager Mike Fontana, there were no corners cut and no sacrifices on quality or aesthetics. Also designed into the plan - the anticipated future expansion of an additional 180 bed tower utilizing much of the same infrastructure and resources saving both time and money when that construction begins.
Riverside County’s newest hospital is being built by Universal Health Services of Pennsylvania, which also operates Inland Valley and Rancho Springs Medical Centers. The hospital has already passed some 2,700 state and federal inspections without issue and is down to the final few dozen prior to occupancy. "Working with inspectors onsite has allowed us to address issues before they become costly or delaying problems", according to CEO Darlene Wetton. "They have been partners with us throughout the process and we have welcomed their input and suggestions." Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the hospital is expected to receive its certificate of occupancy on July 22, and the first patients could be admitted in early September.
Services provided at the Temecula Valley Hospital will include 24/7 emergency services, stroke care, general and orthopedic surgery, pulmonary and palliative care, comprehensive cardiovascular services including open heart surgery, 24 hour visitation and room service dining. The hospital will be hosting a large Community Celebration on Saturday, August 10th from 10am - 4 pm. Tours will be offered and there will be extensive introductions of services, information on associated non-profit organizations as well as activities for the kids.
“We are excited to provide high quality patient-centered, family sensitive care to this community. The response from the community and the physicians in this area has been overwhelmingly positive," according to CEO Wetton.
