Realtors Do Not Try This at Home--OR at Your Listing!

We've all had our less-than-stellar moments as realtors, getting ourselves into fixes that we can barely get out of. Today was one of mine.

I was busy taking photos of a new listing and went out onto the 2nd floor deck to take landscape shots. Here's what the deck looks like:

71778 Northshore Drive Birkenfeld OR 97016

I got done and went to go back inside. Much to my chagrin, the door had closed and was locked. Well, we've all been there before a time or two, right?  HOWEVER....there is no EXIT from that deck other than through that door. I went through a few seconds of self abomination and then thought, hey, maybe the guys who are building two lots over will hear me! So, I yelled HELLO a couple of times. NOTHING. Well, of course they weren't here, because it's raining and they don't even have the foundation done yet. There is no cell service up here. And, being mostly a vacation community, there was no neighbor nearby, either.

So it was up to me to get myself out of this predicament. I marched around looking at all of the possibilities. This sturdy railing was my best bet.

I looked down. Here is what I saw after giving up on the idea of scaling some tree.

After leaning way over, I saw that there was a woodpile underneath enclosed in a heavy metal barrier.

That was my only option besides leaping onto concrete or the deck below and breaking something!

Thank God I wasn't wearing a skirt and had on my trusty Danskos with the rubber soles. I gingerly threw one leg over the railing, shimmied slowly down searching for a foothold below with one leg while the other stayed put on the upper deck and after a moment of consternation I realized that if I changed my hand position I could reach down with one hand and grasp onto a part of the metal barrier and only have a brief second of relying on my balancing skills before letting go of the railing post above and catching myself with my other hand before falling over backwards. Who knew that those early years of gymnastics would come in handy during my real estate career oh so many years later??

I made it with only a small wound to my ego, shook my head at my own stupidity and thought to myself, well THIS will be fun to blog about!!

Jill, "unscathed" is the operative word here! The property OR me....

Marilyn, I just talked with the seller and I (shamefully) shared that story...it turns out that he's been stuck up there too and had to call his son to help!

Sharon, you and I were in the same boat, you just had someone watching you do it--your helpless mom! You were ingenious, and I applaud you for that.

Susan, I always get a kick out of your posts!

Suzanne, it's been fun to recount with friends....

Brenda, there might be a video surfacing, you never know...(you know, those "I survived" type stories, I'm RIGHT UP THERE with the guy who had to cut his arm off when stuck between two rocks...)!

OMG Gayle this is funny (now that you are ok) but definitely something that would happen to me as well.  I once dropped a key to a house right out of a lockbox and it fell onto the deck and down through the slats where we couldn't get it.  Thanks for the laugh!

Debra, been there done that! Didn't get the key back EITHER. Had to put my tail between my legs and call the agent. She'd done the same thing at that property, TOO!

I am VERY impressed - I'm not sure I would have tried that.

My Buyers and I recently got locked in a back yard. Husband tried to climb the fence, but it was rotten and was going to collapse. Of course the only gate had a lock on it. Thankfully we discovered a "doggy door" and the slim wife crawled inside to open the door. I hate those self-locking doors - I watch out for them now!

Glad you were able to escape and tell the tale!  You definitely were thinking more clearly than most of us would have been in that situation.

Gayle - Yep! I've been in a situation where I locked myself out too and I was wearing a dress or skirt AND pantyhose too. But I wasn't on the second floor and I did have to climb over the fence (not a pretty sight).

You were in a tight spot and a dangerous situation. You could have fallen and who knows how long it would have been for someone to find you, if you laid there unconscious. I think all REALTORS need to have their own Medic Alert wristband - that's my solution.

I'm sure glad you are okay.

Gayle, I had to stop by to leave a comment after reading the reblog on Rebecca Gaujot's post.  Fortunately I haven't been in that situation...at least not one that I remember or will admit to (probably blocked it out).
