Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge is a Middletown, Rhode Island Oasis

A Serene Oasis in the Hustle and Bustle of Newport

In the early mornings before sunrise,  Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge is a Middletown, Rhode Island oasis. Situated on a Sakonnet River peninsula, the habitat is just awakening. Deer families can be seen playing in the meadows and nibbling their breakfast, unfazed by the visitors that start to visit as the day dawns.  In its saltmarsh and beach habitats, Sachuest harbors more than 200 bird species, including the snowy owl, northern harrier and the peregrine falcon.  Hikers, joggers, walkers and saltwater fishermen - Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge is a Middletown, RI oasis, with 2.5 miles of rabbit-lined trails providing a serene escape from the many and varied activities of both Middletown and Newport.

Sunrise

Later in the day, natural history exhibits are shown in the visitor center, with educational programs taking place in the days of summer.

Once a horse racing area, then a Naval communications site, I know some of Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge's long history.  Almost daily, I drive or bicycle past surfers' Second Beach to this Middletown oasis, just a 5-minute scenic coastal route by car from the activities of downtown Newport. The road to the refuge peels away any stress of the day.  With spring having passed, and summer now here in all its glory, it's time to enjoy Sachuest.  Each day, natural history exhibits are shown in its large visitor center, with educational programs taking place during summertime.  Surely, Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge is a Middletown, Rhode Island oasis!

Directions from Newport: Travel east through downtown Newport on route 138A. Pass Easton's Beach on your right (the BEST lobster rolls), with its working carousel. Bear right at the famous Atlantic Beach Club  (great Sunday Brunch and beach volleyball) onto Purgatory Road. Pass St George’s School on the left and, at Second Beach – the surfers’ beach - take a right onto Sachuest Point Drive. At the end, you will see the Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge parking lot.  Parking is free, as is admission to the refuge.  Enjoy!
