Summer Safety tips for fires, fireworks, campfires & grilling ~ Bronxville, NY 10708
Here are Helpful Home & Campfire Safety Hints from Hill...with a fireworks "chaser" for Summer 2013:
Summer is a time to enjoy the great outdoors, even if it's on a postage stamp patio like our house in NY, a tent in your lush, grassy backyard or around a campfire in relatively cool(er) woods.
But, it's also important to keep safety in mind -- like with those sparklers and fireworks on the 4th of July. Consider the following tips, thanks to our research at Servpro of Scarsdale / Mount Vernon (NY) and to the National Fire Protection Association.
Use the tips below, to help keep you and your family safe all summer long ~ now that our June 21st Soltice made Summer 2013 official. Remember...:
When using a charcoal grill, only use starter fluids that are designed for barbecue grills; do not add fluid after coals light and are active.
When using your gas grill, ensure that the hose connection to your fuel tank is tight before lighting it; check hoses for leaks. - You can apply soapy water to the hose, to easily and safely reveal any leaks.
- When camping, always use a flame retardant tent and set up camp far away from your campfire

- Always build a campfire downwind from your family's tent area. Clear vegetation and dig a pit before building your fie. Always extinguish the fire before going to sleep, or leaving your campsite.
Store liquid fire starters (not gasoline) away from your home, tent or campfire and only use it if it's absolutely necessary to start your fire. Use dry kindling and paper or napkins to start and "freshen" a campfire. That's the safest way!
Fireworks during July 4th celebrations are as American as apple pies! But, did you know that 2 out of 5 fires reported on this summer holiday are started by fireworks -- more than by any other cause?!
The good news is that you can celebrate Independence Day with fireworks safely, just by following a few simple safety tips:
USE CAUTION!
- Leave fireworks displays to the pros and do not use consumer fireworks, especially near homes and buildings or in the woods!
- The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public display put on by trained pros in your town or city.
- After enjoying your local fireworks display, do not let children pick up the fireworks leftovers because they may still be hot and "active."

Consumer Fireworks
...include sparklers
and firecrackers.
The tip of a sparkler
a sparkler burns at a
temperature of more
than 1,200
degrees Fahrenheit,
and it's hot enough to
cause third-degree burns.
