Freedom Fair Returns to Tacoma for July 4th (and more)
Once again, the Tacoma Events Commission (a local non profit) organization has put together an outstanding program for this year's FREEDOM FAIR for July 4th. It actually has an additional activity on Saturday the 6th, but more on that later. The booths will be open from about 9 am and most of them will be closed down by 8-8:30 pm, to make more viewing spaces available for the evening aerial display.
Tacoma's Freedom Fair takes place on the waterfront along Ruston Way roughly two miles along Commencement Bay. There will be over 100 booths, representing various exhibitors with their wares for sale. There will also be plenty of food booths, mostly focused in three parts of the waterfront. For those with children, there will be some inflatables to play on, as well as a radio control car track. Music will be playing through- out the day, with the exception of during the airshow. This year's airshow may not be quite as fascinating as some in the past, as the sequestration will be keeping the Air Force from sending many (if any) of their planes down for the show. However, there are at least a half dozen confirmed other flights who will be there.
For those who would like to see something a bit different from most celebrations of the 4th - you can take in the 18th annual Beach Pole Vault competition. Though there are categories for beginners, there will also be some outstanding prep, and collegiate participants. Perhaps this could be your opportunity to see someone up close who is later an Olympic champion.
Of course, what would the 4th be without Fireworks? The nice thing with having the Freedom Fair along the waterfront, is that then they can send off the fireworks from a barge in the sound -- and not have to worry about setting homes or yards on fire.
Due to the 4th being mid-week this year, there is another event connected with the celebrations which is being held on Saturday July 6th. That event is the Wings and Wheels activity at the Tacoma Narrows Airport from 11 am to 5 pm. There will be many classic cars, several classic airplanes to see upclose, and a rocket car that will jet down the runway.
Come out and have some good old fashioned fun this 4th at the Tacoma Freedom Fair!
