Even though they say that certifications are required to officially designate a “Green Home” everyone can still have greener homes and live greener lives. By definition a home’s green features are what make it more efficient and environmentally friendly or greener. A resource efficient green is one that compared with a standard home uses less energy, less water, and to include natural resources as wee, as creates less waste which in turn make it healthier for it’s inhabitants.
With vastly increasing amounts of both state and local governments encouraging and some even mandating green design and construction. It’s anticipated that the amount of homes with green certifications and green features will increase dramatically.
I personally take whatever steps possible that I can do my part for the environment by recycling and trying to maintain a healthier and greener home. Here are a few steps you can take in order to maintain your current home and make it greener!
1) Pay your bills online. Not only is it greener, it’s a sanity saver.
2) Reuse scrap paper. Print on two sides, or let your kids color on the back side of used paper.
3) Conduct a quick energy audit of your home.
4) Before buying anything new, first check your local Craigslist or Freecycle.
5) Support local restaurants that use food derived less than 100 miles away, and l learn more about
the benefits of eating locally.
6) Fix leaky faucets.
7) Make your own household cleaners instead of buying them.
9) Lower the temperature on your hot water heater.
10) Unplug unused chargers and appliances.
11) Collect rainwater, and use it to water your houseplants and garden. Use cloth instead of paper to clean your kitchen. Be frugal, and make these rags out of old towels and t-shirts.
12) Repurpose glass jars as leftover containers and bulk storage, especially in the kitchen.
13) Donate to—and shop at—thrift stores. You’ll be recycling perfectly usable items, you’ll be supporting your local economy, and you’ll be saving money
